Sprang upon by a lady on entering the church and quickly relieved of a euro each. It to be fair this was significantly less than the entry to Bilbao cathedral and probably more spectacular. She gave us a guide in English, used her lazer pen to point out items of interest and gave a quick safety brief (hard to see steps around the altar- be aware).

Beautiful gold leaf carvings around the alter and the amazing vaulted ceiling were the highlights for me. Along with the international wine collection - a bit odd, especially as I couldn’t see anything for UK!

If you like buildings and mixtures of architectural styles do not miss this little gem. The stonework of the main structure is superb with pillars that seem to disappear into the heavens. The high church decoration, particularly round the altar but also of the organ is sumptuous. There is also a small exhibition of Caravaggio style paintings which are very interesting. Entrance is free but nobody should leave without donating to keep this lovely bit of history open. The only thing I didn't like was the electronic version for lighting a remembrance candle. Not "real" enough for me.

This church does not look like much outside, but what a pleasant surprise when you enter. Very ornate with lovely paintings.

We were in Haro on Wednesday 9th September, and considering that in Haro there is not much to see apart from bodegas and the church, we were looking forward to seeing the inside of the church. The notice on the LOCKED door gave the opening times of the church, and in spite of us being there in the middle of the stated opening time, it was locked, and remained so (we went back later to check). So we didn't get inside :(
Looks impressive from the outside though!

The plaza Ingles and the St Tomas church were a great hit and that coupled with the best wine shop in the rioja valley just around the corner as well as calle de St Tomas which was a street of night life and the beethoven restaurant down stairs is purported to be the best in Haro. We ate in several restaurants along the 4 or 5 squares within 200 meters.

The church of Santo Tomas is simply magnificent. Its austere walls and vaulted ceiling create a striking contrast with abundantly decorated gilded altar...brilliant! The exterior of the church is equally beautiful; especially the bell tower. There is a viewpoint at the back where you can get perfect views of the Rioja Valley and the vineyards.

Beautiful church with some very old vestments (17th Century) on display. The highly decorated organ is unusual. It is more interesting than most churches in this part of Spain.

Nice walk around the area outside and inside of the church. The architecture is wonderful and you'll learn about the culture.

With regret we were unable to visit the magnificent church, and see its splendour, and altarpiece as it was closed.
Make sure you know when it is open before visiting if you wish to go inside.
At this time (30th May), the notice on the door said open Fridays and Saturdays 10.00 to 14.00, and Sundays.
Enjoy :-) if you can get in !
