Amazing to think this is probably the first buildings that still survive in Gibraltar. The tower was rebuilt in the 14th century and is in marvelous condition. Conservationists have staged a room where a furnace heated water for bathing and washing. You can climb up narrow steps to the roof to enjoy great views.

This beautiful castle is located in Sintra which is just a train ride of about 20 minutes from central Lisbon. On arrival many desks and tours touting for visitors. So, if you get the ticket which takes you on the hop on hop off bus you can decide. However, my suggestion and from my experience is to go to Pena Palace first as the queues are much longer. Then Moorish castle and then Sintra town itself. The other castles and palaces if you have time and started very early.
Moorish castle though is lovely and there’s some great views as it was built as a Military fort about the 10th century. Still looks amazing and also make sure you have good treaded shoes as steep too.

Monday 22nd April we spend the afternoon wandering around visiting the sights and landmarks of theTop of the Rock's Nature Reserve.
We had just visited the incredible World War II Tunnels and we began our descent into the Town. Along the way we passed what appeared to be the entrance into to the Tower so we walked in. Walking trough some gardens, that her terrapins swimming in a pond, we crosed a pathway, which we assumed was once a drawbridge that led to the entrance and base of the Tower.
Above the entrance to the Tower, know as the Tower of Homage, was one of the famous metal red plates of Gibraltar, giving a brief history and information about the Tower.
As we entered the Tower we were faced by a metal staircase, that followed the contours of the building up to the roof. Too be honest we did not think that our legs would make it up and down the stairs having been walking all afternoon, so we left the way we came in. We had seen the Castle from above so the views from the top of the Tower would not have been any better.
We also got the sense that we hadn't used the correct entrance. Having walked a little bit further down the road we saw a gate with a sign Ticket Office for the Castle and gardens, yes we had used the exit.
The Castle was a medieval fortification on the Rock with the most striking feature being the Tower of Homage, from the top a flag flies. It is a feature of the Rock's skyline and visible from near and far.

We visited this after the WW2 tunnels, which are only yards away. It was at the end of a very tiring walk from the top, and so maybe we weren't as receptive as others (?). The ticket is included in the Nature Reserve tiaket.
Worth seeing if you are in the ares, and some of the interior explanations are good. Good view from the top

Saw several Apes sitting nearby, some of the better photos we took. Give about 20-30 minutes to visit and read about the history of this castle, brilliant views. Loved the ceiling in the one room.

It is worth the climb to the top of the castle to get the views all round. There could be better information boards but seemed there was only one outside. I would say if you have the time to visit then go see it if you like medieval history but this could do with some more love and attention to turn it into a better site. But still not bad and the staff there were helpful.

We were at first excited about going in but when we had paid our ticket and walked across the bridge to the castle and stepped inside, that was it for us.
I have vertigo so there was no chance of me going up on the open flight of stairs and my partner does not like open slatted stairs that you can see through when you go up.
So with this in mind, we turned back round and left and just walked around the outside garden which looked like someone else's garden.
If we didn't have our issues above i'm sure I may have given a slightly better rating but at least you know. So, if you have vertigo or hate looking through stairs when you walk up avoid this :)

This castle overlooking the bay gives a great view of Gibraltar and the Spanish coast, so its worth climbing the steps inside just for that reason. Theres a few bits of interest inside the castle but not a great deal of information. Not a bad place to visit.

We walked up to the Moorish Castle, not realising the number 1 bus will take there as well. This is one of several starting points for the Upper Rock visit and only those coming up in the official taxi or with tour guides get access beyond this point. We spent an hour here enjoying the castle, its grounds and spectacular views watching the planes land and take off. However to reach the top of the tower you do have to climb some steep steps. Within the grounds is a little arbour with a bench under the shade where we sat and ate our picnic lunch in front of a little pond. A couple of apes came down, but soon left as there was nothing for them.

I was looking forward to seeing this Moorish castle, and it was included on the combination entrance ticket I bought for the rock, but upon reaching it I was rather let down. There's very little to actually see, and the tower is empty. There's a nice view of Gibraltar from the top of the tower, and the garden is quite nice, but the Gibraltar Museum has a Moorish bath-house on site which is a more interesting look into the Rock's Muslim past.
Still, I went in the evening and had the place to myself, so it was at least nice and peaceful. May be enjoyable for history buffs.
