When we arrived to Gibraltar we were informed that the cable car would not be working for a few days but could do an organised tour. £38 for entry to the Upper rock, taxi and tour guide however they would not be going to all the points of interest. We decided against this and did it ourselves.
Local bus to Moorish Castle where we started our walk as this was advised to be the best start point by local bus driver.
We got the adult hopper tickets which allows unlimited use apart from bus 5 and 10 and was £2.50. They do not accept card and dont give chanhe so have exact money. Tickets for the park £13.
We walked the majority of the Upper Rock only missing out on the Mediterranean Steps which took around 6hrs.
A good level of fitness is required if walking as its very very hilly!! Bring plenty of water and sun cream.
Various opportunities for photos along the way.
The Monkeys are scattered around various places within the park so you'll be sure to see one. Make sure to put all objects (hats, glasses, food and drink) inside your bag and wear it to the front. I had one land on my back and try and open my bag.
The only food/drink outlet we saw was at St Michaels Cave however various toilets along the route.
My only criticisms would be more signage around the park to know where things are and also some of the steps could do with a rope/barrier as a 'bannister' to help steady yourself especially on the walk down from the suspension bridge.

Tuesday 16th May and we pre-booked our tickets online to ride on the cable car and to visit the Nature Reserve.

The tickets cost us £34 for a full ticket and £32.50 for a senior ticket. Initally it does seem expensive but at the end of our visit we agreed it was worth every penny, we enjoyed every minute.

Although we booked return tickets for the cable car, while walking around there was a point were it is quicker to walk back to the Town rather than get back to the cable car. We decided to walk back to the Town as see as much as we could.

We visited the awesome St Michael's Cave, crossed the Windsor Suspension Bridge, also saw O'Hara's Battery at the highest point of the Rock.

We walked around the Skywalkway with it's panoramic views. We visited Ape's Den with famous the Barbary Macaques, keep everything in your bag and hold on tight to it.

There were other sights such as Queens Gate and Charles V Wall, the entire place is steeped in history.

As we approached the Town, our final visit was to the Devil's Gap Battery with it's guns still in place.

All the time we were treat to spectacular views across the Rock, the Mediterranean and Bay of Gibraltar. We also witnessed amazing feats of engineering, man-made caves, tunnels, megga gun emplacements and more.

There was so much more to see including the World War II Tunnels, Great Siege Tunnels, the Moorish Castle, sadly our time here was running out and our legs were objecting to any more walking.

Would most definitely re-visit here, spending more time here to see the sights we missed this time.

Get a one way trip on the cable car then walk slowly all the way down after stopping at all the recommended places. Plenty of apes everywhere. Entrance is included with cable car ticket, wear your wrist band and scan to get into the caves and tunnels.
Great views from the top of the Spanish coast to the north and west and Morocco to the south

I did not want to leave this review but felt I had to.
My wife and I love Gib. We married here in 2019 and returned this year.
Many years ago I lived here and you could drive and walk up the rock for free.
Times change and last year we were charged £5 each to walk the road and paths of the upper rock before returning into town.
It was lovely.
We decided to do the same this week just a short walk from town to take in the views overlooking the airport only to find that we were asked to pay £15 each.
£30 to simply walk up and down the rock.
I was shocked and found this outrageous.
The man said to us that so many people have walked off refusing to pay.
Gibraltar could have made £10 for my wife and I and made money from many others but instead they also walked away.
Is this how Gibraltar has become. A money making racquet.
Shame on you.

The cable car to the top of the rock was disgusting. Too many people crammed into the cart, to make as much money as possible, for around £20 return is an absolute rip off and last 2 minutes, I genuinely felt unsafe and I’ve been to a war zone. Whilst at the so called ‘nature reserve’, £18/£19 a day is astronomical, considering what the place looks like. Beautiful views, don’t get me wrong and great to see the Barbary macaques, but my god, the place looks like a landfill site. Does anyone actually clean the place after the tourists leave rubbish all over the place? To make this even worse, the amount of vehicles, taxis, mini buses and private cars constantly going up and down is vile. How is this helping the Barbary macaques with the noise and car pollution? It’s ok though, a Londoner is making thousands a pounds a day, and supposedly the elderly and children can see the monkeys, whilst he drives in his mini bus adding more pollution to the rock. Also one of the drivers was feeding the monkeys, isn’t this illegal? Saw zero wildlife barring a few pigeons, probably due to the race track and constant vehicles going round it. We walked up and down the second day as I couldn’t bring myself to be ripped off or killed on the cable car. Clean up the mess and sort the rubbish out. Too many people employed doing absolutely nothing. Plus how can you call it a nature reserve with all the rubbish everywhere, you certainly don’t get that at Spurn Point near Hull.

The place in itself is beautiful and defiantly worth the visit. The reason for the low rating is because of the price paid and the poor upkeep of it along with lack of information about the history. When there are signs some are damaged and unreadable.

Took the cable car up to the top and payed into the nature reserve, unfortunately it was a cloudy day so couldn’t see out to Morocco, but the views of the coast where beautiful.

There is a lot of walking to get to the various attractions which is fine and we knew this but the map is difficult to read. Not enough signs about or information about the history of each place or the area in general.

It’s a fun day out, and we did really enjoy walking about it but for the price you pay it should really be better kept.

We made the ascent of the rock on foot from the Moorish castle (tickets are bought there). Admission costs £25 (about €30). This gives access to many activities (grote, Barbary macaque, tunnel, bridge, glass lookout).
In itself it is the only activity worth the detour but it is extremely expensive if we add to that the 12€ of parking.
I advise you to do it as soon as the opening in the morning because otherwise entire tourist buses disembark. And thank you for not feeding or touching macaques like some tourists. I hoped in my heart that he would get bitten.

Ow much??? This tight Yorkshireman wasn't going to spend £38 on a cable car and an all attraction pass. No Sir!

So after parking Spanish side, we set off, across RAG Gib using a GPS phone with detailed trail map. The temperature was late 20s so not too hot as we made our way through the small back streets.

We didn't want to go on the Cable Car for 2 reasons. One the cost (£20 cheaper per person minus cable car) and secondly when you look at a map (not those provided) but a detailed online map, backed by the support of Chat GPT, the logical thing when walking up there on foot is to head due north of the rock (left of handout map) and check out the Moorish Castle, plus the World War II Tunnels and the Great Siege Tunnels. With me so far?

Then head near the Lime Kiln and up towards the Top Cable Car Station as these are MUCH quieter roads and many are pedestrian only. The other positive is that they traverse the rock and so not too steep. After a couple of hours with visits to the aforementioned we arrived at the top as a sea of trippers came into view. Blackpool on a good day comes to mind.

The restaurant is a rip off. But then most restaurants on mountains/hills are. The nature of the beast.

Any way after our £6 for two cans experience, we walked to the Skywalk. The underside of the walk covered in sand, it looked like walking on a sand dune rather than air. Hey ho.

Then the Caves which in fairness were worth a visit, the sound a light show again reminding me of Blackpool minus the candy floss.

We dodged a myriad of small mini buses intent on killing anyone walking in the road and started our descent, again using our GPS which largely mirrored the handout map. However, this route would have been a nightmare had we come up it, simply because it is not pedestrian friendly. We were ok going down as we we were walking quickly. Going up, unfit people struggled with the ascent and the car dodging.

30 minutes and we were down and another 20 back in our car heading to Cadiz.

In summary, it's one of those things you have to do.

Gib sadly is a bit of a dump and gotta say if the Spanish would like it, then I would say be my guest. But as the UK is a major colonial power in the World (yer right) we will doubtless retain. God save the King.

Our first visit to Gibraltar and this wonderful nature area. We absolutely loved it( with the sunning views on the east and west coast of Spain and continental Africa. I’d recommend taking a tour to explore the nature reserve, rather than the cable car. The people we saw walking did not look happy about it (and it wasn’t even warm weather!).

Signs should be better, and you should receive a better map.
We missed e.g. Ape's Den due to poor signs, even though we passed it.

Also be sure your travel companion is ok with this type of walking tours :D.

We bought this as a combination cable car return + nature reserve ticket from web beforehand.
The return was unnecessary for the cable car, since at the end, it was "easier" to walk down than to return up to the cable car top station.

It was very hot, too hard walking for kilometres in a hot sun.

Have comfy good shoes (closed, since rocky places), and lots of water!
We did not actually see many people walking, people went by some private taxes, so maybe they had hired a private tour.
It was dangerous to walk on the very narrow paths when cars passed by.

I think they should just sell separate tickets to places you wish to see, not one full ticket for the total nature reserve area, because it is quite impossible to see all places in a day, especially in the hot summer season.

Also it was mentioned WWII tunnels are closed, but we ended up passing them anyway and checked in, and they were open after all!

St Michael's cave is nice.

At top cable car station it is said to be special souveniers, but there actually is no shop (just a few items sold in a corner).
At St Michael's cave there is souvenirs sold, and a pub, so you can get some refereshments.
