A beautiful place, full of charm
Jul 2020
In the heart of the old town and a few meters from the noisy and busy El Franco street, there is a green corner of peace and quiet. Fonseca College was built in 1538 by Archbishop Alonso III de Fonseca. The architect in charge of the project was Diego de Siloe. It is an oasis of peace in the historic center of Santiago. It is built around a courtyard which is accessed through a hall with an ogive vault decorated with star motifs. The courtyard gallery has two floors: the lower floor has semicircular arches and the upper floor has segmental arches. Like the whole old city of Santiago, there are surprises on every corner. Lovely inner courtyard and very well kept. You can see here the statue dedicated to Alonso III de Fonseca. It is the work of Galician sculptor Ramon Conde Bermudez, and was installed in 1995 to mark the fifth centenary of the University of Santiago de Compostela. A beautiful atmosphere, a place full of history at its best, charming.

May 2019
A short walk from the Cathedral you will find the Fonseca College, one of the early places of the University. It was started by Archbishop Alfonso de Fonseca around 1507 in what was his home and a nice one it was.You can visit to the inner garden which is a pleasant respite from the busy street outside.

A place of memories
Sep 2019
It was a great place to visit with someone who remebered the building from her student days in the 50s. The cloister retains its scholarly athmosphere, and it is easy to imagine it full of students.

peaceful interlude
Oct 2019
Ancient university and worth a brief wander round for some peace and quiet from the busy streets of Santiago. That's about it. Nothing stands out except fr its antiquity and there are more striking buildings within easy walking distance.

An oasis of peace
Oct 2019 • Couples
It is always fascinating to see how historic European universities are at the heart of their cities, near to the seats of power and religion. The Colegio was constructed as a university building, though it has had other uses, and today houses the university library with an exhibition space underneath a magnificent timber ceiling.

The building is arranged around a quiet courtyard, an oasis compared to the busy streets outside, a courtyard in which to walk and study.

We passed by, then drawn in the courtyard we discovered this place. We returned when it was open after the afternoon closing. Purchased some great merchandise, entered a few buildings, took photos, and we will have a great time giving gifts to our friends and relatives back in Southern California.

College Dating Back To 1544
May 2019 • Couples
This is a college that dates back to 1544 and was started by Archbishop Alonsos Fonseca in what I believe was his family home. It has interesting old architecture and a central garden and worth a visit. Perhaps the statue inside is Fonseca although that was not clear.
