Cannot be called beautiful, but important. Sometimes...
Jun 2019
Quintana meant open public space in the middle ages. This square itself can not be called beautiful. Not the best part of the Cathedral is facing her. And the monastery on the square is not the best example of the genre. The square is divided into two parts: the lower - Quintana de Mortos (`Quintana of the Dead) and the upper-Quintana de Vivos (`Quintana of the Living). Quintana de Mortos was used as a Cathedral cemetery until 1780. So I don't really want to drink coffee here. The only feature of this square is the Holy gate. They are used only in the so-called happy years, when the birthday of the Apostle James on June 25 falls on Sunday. I don't know why this is so important to Catholics. The doors are opened in these years, and pilgrims passing through them receive full absolution. The next year of forgiveness is 2021.

Interesting

There is a terrace with shops and cafe which means this is a good place for sit and watch the world go by. The cathedral is highly decorated on this side too. Next year the Holy door located here will be opened so it will be special but probably busy and crowded. There is a great swathe of steps on one side so plenty of free seating.

Lovely hotel in great location
Oct 2019 • Couples
We love this hotel. It appears to be quite new inside and the renovation is beautiful. The room and bathroom was spotless.
The hotel offers an all day self serve breakfast room which is a fantastic idea.
The only thing that in my opinion lets this hotel down is the reception staff. They are efficient and do their job but there is no warmth and they appear quite cold and unwelcoming. We were here for 2 nights and dealt with two different receptionists and they were both the same.
Otherwise this is a great place to stay.

Large Square At The Back Of The Cathedral
May 2019 • Couples
With all the narrow streets in Santiago de Compostela this was a large opens space and one that you are sure to pass through more than once on your walks in the old town.It has some cafes and one side is the cathedral.

Somewhere to sit when it's not raining
Apr 2019 • Couples
A very pleasant square to sit in round the side of the Cathedral, with good cafes, a seemingly-resident guitarist, a random assortment of beggars (some persistent) & a sun trap when the sun appears (not that often in April!).

Big square at the back of the Cathedral.
Sep 2018 • Friends
This square can be accessed from the Via Sacra or the Plaza De Praterias. One side is the rear wall of the Cathedral, which is currently undergoing major renovation. Another is a Benedictine Nunnery previously famous as a place where the public could buy fresh almond cakes made by the Nuns. The Nuns gave now moved elsewhere because of the noise from the Plaza. At the far end is a building previously occupied by the Clergy from the Cathedral, but which is now a restaurant and cafe. Very well worth a visit.

Cosy square
Aug 2018 • Friends
Very cosy square behind the cathedral that is a good alternative to the main square. It is better to enter the cathedral from this square as the doors are wide open and there are normally no queues here. There are several cafés and bars on the square as well as a good part of the old town to explore on this side of the city.
