As this was our first visit to Santiago de Compostela, we felt obliged to walk up to the Cathedral, despite it being mid-week in June there were many tourists doing the same as us. The street theatre in the form of tableaux etc were what...More

One visits the cathedral after a pilgrimage and the mass is amazing. We were very luck to have the large incense burner lit and swinging at the end of our mass. A must see.

The cathedral is a must even if you are not catholic. There are e guided tours. You can embrace the Saint image from behind the altar. You can also attend mass; right now we are at the vísperas of the saint holyday.

We made a dedicated trip here just to see the famous Cathedral and was very disappointed to find the entire front encased in scaffolding. There is major reconstruction going on. The size and scale of the Cathedral is massive and impressive. Unfortunately, the high alter...More

Was OK in June, although unseasonably hot, but I bet it is very crowded in July/August. Many pilgrims around but I am afraid we came by car.

Richly endowed by centuries of pilgrims, the Cathedral is heavily decorated in gold on the Baroque altar pieces. The Cathedral is very popular with visitors and queues are likely to be extensive to enter and to visit the rear of the altar piece to embrace...More

Throughout our travels we have been to many different cathedrals, some very grand, some relatively simple. This being the end of the many pilgrimage walks, has more significance than most.

I wanted to see Santiago de Compostela as I was intrigued about the pilgrimage itself. I was expecting something more spectacular that what I saw. First of all, the city of Santiago was a major disappointment. Congested, not very picturesque, somewhat overly touristy, difficult to...More

I always visit cathedrals when I travel. While Santiago's is beautiful it is not as stunning as others I have seen. Maybe it was because of the works or the many tourists who were looking for shelter from the rain but I thought it felt...More

It was still under construction when we were there three weeks ago and I believe the construction will continue for a couple more years.

Hi there, You can go to the cathedral's website and click on botafumeiro in left column. It lists days they will use it. Bad news is I just did this and saw Friday nights have been discontinued. If that's true, only the holy... More
