Traditional "smoke maker" with strong smell, so it can make the area holy but, also, make less strong the "smell of the pilgrims", as known by tradition. Majestic just as much as interesting.

The current censer is not the same as it was originally. It is made of an alloy of brass and bronze by José Losada in 1851. The French are concerned with the appearance and disappearance of the former one. The first Botafumeiro was made of pure silver with money from the French king Louis XI. For three centuries, the censer delighted pilgrims with its exquisite decoration. The French Napoleonic army melted it down in 1809 during the occupation. The question arises, why is such a huge censer here? The secret of the largest censer in the world is simple and not at all romantic. A huge amount of incense was supposed to drown out the unbearable stench from thousands of pilgrims who not only came to worship the relics of St. Mark, but also slept in the Cathedral. This indescribable aroma could only be smothered by 40 kg of incense. Now everything is better with hygiene, so Botafumeiro is lit only on big Catholic holidays. 8 strong tiraboilero swing the censer weighing 80 kg to the speed of the car -60 km/h. However, the Cathedral is under repair, so the attraction is closed. 2021 will be the so-called happy year, so the censer will move again.

You have to be there to believe your eyes. During the ceremony of welcoming, or "cleansing: the pilgrims et al, the monks swing a huge censer over the heads of the crowd in the main nave of the Cathedral de Santiago de Compostela. The censer, the butafumeiro, swing in a gigantic arc wafting its smoke the entire length of the church. To cover that distance the censer seems to almost graze the heads of the folks in the center of the room. Scary but an impressive ceremony and worth witnessing. It isnt done for every service so check with the church office to determine when the ceremony is scheduled.

Unfortunately we could not see this wonderful apparatus due to the renovation work. We were hoping that we could at least see it even though no services are being held in the Cathedral at the moment

I visited here while on my Camino and unfortunately as you can see it was under construction... the tour was still available to pay homage at the tomb of Santiago. No photos are allowed inside the crypt which is a good thing to preserve the serenity and importance of this historic and religious landmark.

You can see the pulleys and ropes from which the botafumario hangs.

Yes, the Cathedral is under construction, which is a letdown. That being said, the enormity of the place alone I feel is worth a look, which may bring you back for a second look in a few years.

The Cathedral is under renovation, it seems likely to be a long project. You may enter, but only to a small space under and behind. The line looked lengthly, moved quickly and was tight quarters as you more or less flowed with the crowd.
