A pleasant and lively square, one of the icons in town and somewhat similar in spirit to other famous squares in other Spanish towns such as Salamanca or Madrid.

A majestic and amazing square. The square was designed by the architect Juan de Ciorraga in 1877. It forms a large rectangle of more than 10,000 square meters. There is a town hall here and the square is surrounded by restaurants of all kinds and budgets. There is also a monument of Maria Pita in the square. A good place to have a drink, eat or just sit and watch.

We’ve been to this square many times and it has a real presence. Enjoy a drink or some food in the bars that are positioned on the square and take in the atmosphere of a remarkable setting.

Plaza de Maria Pita, designed by the architect Juan de Siorraga in 1877, is located in the center of the city. However in 1589 the fortress wall separates the new city occupied by the English and the old city which was defended by the citizens . It was here that Maria Pita performed her feat as Joan of Arc inspiring the defenders of the city to resist the English troops. The 3-meter-high bronze statue of Mary was designed by the sculptor Xosé Castiñeiras. She holds a pike in one hand and her dead husband in the other. The Spanish heroine tramples the dead Englishman with her foot. According to legend this is the brother of Admiral Francis Drake who defeated the Invincible Armada and besieged La Coruna. Maria Pita looks from a 6-meter pedestal at the City Hall - a beautiful building in the art Nouveau style of the early XX century. Similar buildings can be found in Madrid, Barcelona, as well as in Montevideo and Buenos Aires.

Just the place for a coffee, to see this lovely central square with its imposing buildings, dominated by the city hall. Easy to reach by foot.

Very nice little square with town hall. If you compare it to Madrid, Barcelona, Paris or London is a modest place. But don't compare it enjoy it. But enjoy it after 10 because in Spain life starts after nightfall. When the square gets illuminated it looks like people get attracted to it.
Drink a few glasses of Spanish wine in some of the dozen restaurants on the square.

This is a lovely square in the old city and well worth a visit, with the marina and lots of nice restaurants there or a short walk away, and easy parking under it.

Nice square and good to relax with a drink at any time. In September there were only a small handful of restaurants there and so it was a very large empty space in the main. I guess in high summer it would be busier & fuller.
