"Castells" are human towers built traditionally in festivals at many locations within Catalonia. The monument reproduces to the smallest detail one of these "Castells". It is extremelly accurate since the sculptor, Francesc Anglès i Garcia, is a physician!
"Castells" have different structures and names. This one is a "4 de 8" i. e. 6 tiers of 4 people plus a squatting kid and another one with his/her hand raised, which is the sign that determines when the "castell" is completed.
The sculpture is made of bronce, 11 metres high, and the 222 figures are real size. Guess how much it weighs? 12 tons!!!!
Many tourists have photos taken beside the monument, next to the musicians ("grallers") and some kids even climb up to have a nice photo.
What people don't know is that amongst the figures of people on the base of the "castell" the sculptor carved the faces of world-famous artists such as Pau Casals, Pablo Picasso, and Joan Miró.
As a proud "tarragonina" (born and raised in Tarragona) I hope that the monument helps spread this important element of Catalan culture, "castells", amongst visitors to our town.

It is a modern sculpture showing the mount of a "castell", human tower belonging to the tradition of this part of Catalonia. Note, aside from the tower, the director shouting orders to the castellers and the musicians which are a necessary component of the singular show

It's on the main boulevard, a cool place where you can take some pictures and imagine how they do it for real.

This huge bronze sculpture by the Catalan sculptor Francesc Angles i Garcia is located in the middle of Rambla Nova. The 11-meter-high monument was revealed in 1999.

The monument is made up of a total of 219 figures. There are figures such as Pau Casals, Joan Miro, Pablo Picasso, Antoni Gaudi, the sculptor himself, and other characters from Tarragona's municipal life represented.

The real human towers are a Catalan tradition. They have been built for more than two hundred years.

A great celebration of a Catalan custom. Fab to stand next to and though its a monument it 'feels' alive.

Great visual representation of the classic Catalan tradition. It is not easy walking distance from the other common attractions on the coast (amphitheater & circus), we flagged a cab to make the trip.

Impossible to miss when walking on Rambla Nuova in Tarragona. An interesting and impressive monument, with very detailed features of a traditional Catalan human tower.
