This model is exceptionally well done and helps lay out the ancient city. Great place to start before exploring the sites. Not a lot of written explanation, but highly recommended!

Before touring the city, this is a vital destination to understand the geography of Tarragona’s famous past and where the current ruins fit into the modern cityscape. It is in the ancient part of the city and in a wonderfully excavated and maintained building. Tarragona’s past is far more notable than we originally realised and this model shows the positions of the fortifications, the arenas and forum as well as learning about the importance of the city to Augustus when it was the wealthiest city on the coast. We were lucky to have an excellent guide [Paco] who pointed out all the salient buildings to explain their importance and he concentrated on those we were to pass during our walking tour of the old city afterwards. There are also some fascinating devil sculptures in the entrance which are used in fiery processions.

Although it lacks some renewal, and the people working there couldn't care less of your visit, the Model lets you organize your visit, and realize the huge city Tarragona was in the roman era. The model itself is placed in one of the staircase houses that allowed access to the administrative part of the city, now occupied by the "casc antic", being its twin tower the Torre del Protectorat, that now holds part of MNAT.
If you visit Tarragona, the model will help you remember where you are in the city while you visit the remnants of the old capital.
Some audiovisuals or even a small leaflet wouldn't hurt, or at least a friendly person willing to give somewhat of an explanation instead of comfortably sitting in the desk looking down to his/her "candy crush saga" game.

Very detailed model which really puts the Roman remains that you have spent time viewing, when wandering around Tarragona, into perspective. Worth a look.

We went on a Monday, when most of the Roman sites were closed, but the Antiga Audiencia was the one that we did find open. Interesting to get an idea of the scale of the Roman port.

This is a really good model of how the town of Tarragona (or Tarraco) would have looked back in the Roman days. Free entry and worth a look to help you relate to the Roman remains that you'll still see in the old town today.

This is a great starter to help you visualize how the area used to be as you walk around and through the ruins. There is also a video near by that is helpful. It was difficult for me to put what I was seeing in a larger visual context before the video and Model.

Free to visit, Great Model of Roman Tarragona. Roman ruins including a well, 3D film explaining the model. Walkway over to see the ruins below. Don't miss the Spanish Civil War Revolutionary Graffiti on the end wall, a must see for all Spanish Civil War buffs.
