Nice nature and view if there is good weather. However it's expensive and a lot needs to be done about safety and the hiking tracks improved as well as being better marked with signs. They also need to put a safety fence on the sides of the tracks as there is no fence and it's just the Edge of the Mountain which is not really safe. The staff also need English training.

The hike from the top of the Sant Joan funicular station is not difficult, and has amazing views of the Montserrat monastery and the rock formations in the mountains surrounding the monastery

This is a very worthwhile day trip from Barcelona to the mountain monastery of Montserrat. There are two ways to go. You can take the train for 1 hour from the low level station at Placa D' Espanya or you can book an excursion by bus. On this occasion we chose the latter costing € 55 for an afternoon tour with Julia Travel just off Carrer de Pelai near Placa de Catalunya. Either way, you end up at the Cremalerra cog railway that takes you up the mountain to the monastery. There is much to see and do. Other funicular short journeys are available to viewpoints with breathtaking mountain scenery. A must see is the truly amazing basilica with its much visited Black Madonna Statue. Be warned, there are queues to see the statue with its high vantage point overlooking the basilica interior. Montserrat is a place of nooks and crannies each with its own point of interest. There are several eating options and there are audiovisual shows and museums also to visit. If you would like to see everything then the best plan is for an early morning self guided trip by train from Placa D' Espanya. That way you will have a full day to explore at your own pace with no travel co.restrictions . A highly recommended day away from Barcelona.

There are many worthwhile treks in the mountains of Montserrat.

To my opinion, the best trek of all is the Sant Jeroni. It takes quite a while to get there, but the views we can see from there will remain for the rest of my life. I was able to see the Monastery Monserrat from up high, enjoyed the out-of-this-world mountains and a view over the whole region. It was unbelievable.

The Degotalls is another interesting trek, where we can enjoy the Pyrenees and the flat lands.

The trek of Monastery to Santa Cova was quite worthwhile. There were shrines on the path to the Santa Cove. Here too we could see clearly the Pyrenees and the flatlands. There were also some intriguing mountains as well!

The trek to the hermitages of Sant Joan and Sant Onofre are quite interesting as well. The road is steep but the walk is short. We get a good idea of the surroundings and can see a small church and a hermitage that gives quite a lot of beautiful sceneries.

The trek to Santa Anna hermitage is another good option. We get to walk among the giants (mountains), once at our destination we will be at the center of hermitage.

There are many options and all are worthwhile!

This monastery is very high in the mountains about an hour out of Barcelona, easily reached by train and funicular. It is a nice break from the buzz of the city and the views are unbelievable. Many hikes and a number of less challenging walks are to be found, with a station of the cross culminating st the very apex of a high peak.

There isn't that much to do here unless you want to spend a while in the Santa Maria Abbey and museums but the views are incredible and worth the journey. Definitely recommend going up the next level using the rail (or walking if you are keen!) you can then go on a 15 minute hike to the almost peak (the peak a bit longer and up steep stairs, didn't go) and see right across the valley and on a clear day over to Barcelona and Mallorca (according to the sign).

We got the train from Barcelona Espanya which was €20 return with the cable car up. Get off at the first stop for the cable car, second stop is the rail.

Second rail return was €12.50 each.

Would probably recommend coming in the morning have lunch then head back to Barcelona for the afternoon!

Montserrat is the most favourite that I have ever visited in Barcelona. The mountain is an hour away from the centre of the city. I joined a day tour including the transportation and a lunch at winery plus wine tasting.

Montserrat is a sacred place with church and the landscape is quite amazing. You can take a short walk to explore the area or some people will do hiking and cycling there.

This mountain is just breathtaking. It will blow your mind away. Just by sitting and looking at the mountains, you will realise how great this beautiful nature God gave to the Spanish people. It was a greatest memorable experience I ever had. Highly recommended for everyone. Be sure you wear comfortable shoes.

Booked this early access half day coach tour. Left at 6.45 and arrived at approximately 8am. Included in the tour was a walk up the mountain (approx. 20 minutes each way, depending on fitness), visit to monastery, museum, audio-visual experience and drink tasting( bag of biscuits for those who do not drink alcohol ). Also opportunity to take a train up the mountain. All this to be done and arrive back on the coach at 10.30!! Bearing I mind as this was early ,some activities did not open until 9am. No one was able to do everything. Whatever we managed was rushed. Our guide, Martina, was understanding and tried to do her best so that we could enjoy the tour as best as we could. I felt rushed and could not enjoy the beauty of this place as well as I wanted to. Two and a half hours is NOT half day. This tour not recommended but the mountain is certainly worth a visit. Best to make own way there (as I found out while there) as there is a train service to this mountain.
