There are similar squares in many cities and there is nothing here that singles this one out. You are likely to walk through and the many cafes/restaurants look boring. Certainly not a destination area itself.

Read about why they call it the independence place and enjoy the food and drinks in all the local bars in the sun. In the centre of the square stands a monument (1894) commemorating the 1809 defenders of the city of Girona. Read, drink, enjoy...More

Nice big open square. Not traffic free but narrow road within it keeps traffic minimal Cafes on various sides so you can select in or out of the sun as takes your fancy

The statue in the square commemorates the loss of half the town in the battle with Napolean's French army. Just because there are yellow ribbons on it doesn't mean the statue has any content related to the current Catalonian struggle to separate from Spain. On...More

Great square with bars and restaurants around it. If you want a bar or restaurant, this is the place to go in Girona, other than the Rambla.

A typical Spanish square. Restaurants lined the square as well as a few hawkers selling stuff. It's definitely much quieter in these area compare to the old town.

Came here after dinner to have a drink and sit outside. Lovely and lively area with many options for food. Not many struck me as traditional places, more focused for tourist, but still a nice place of a meal or drink.

This is a huge square with lots of lovely pavement cafes on two sides. Traffic is limited to one side so it is a peaceful place to watch the world go by.

The square is a lovely place to visit on the way to Girona Cathedral - there are plenty of benches to sit on so a visit here doesn't have to cost a lot. The gelato is lovely if you fancy something refreshing that won't break...More
