Here Eiffel warmed up before the construction of the famous tower.
Looking at the shallow Onyar River in June, it is hard to believe that it once demolished bridges. Bridges are the forerunners of the Eiffel Bridge. And it was more than once... Another name for the bridge - the Bridge of the old Fishmongers is obviously connected with the corresponding trade nearby. Eiffel won the right to build a bridge in a competition, offering a price lower than local builders. No one believed that it would last. However, it also happened as in the case of its famous tower in Paris, which was built, as you know, as a temporary structure for the exhibition. Completed in 1877 shortly before the tower, the Eiffel Bridge stands as securely as its tower. Red and metallic. The most notable among the 11 bridges of Girona.

It is essential to stop in Girona if you are spending your holiday in Catalonia. The old town is very charming and picturesque, plan a walk of about an hour and a half. There are several cafes, ice cream parlours and a few restaurants to please.

    Before the tower
The Pont de les Peixateries Velles, also known as the Eiffel Bridge (Pont de Ferro), is a historic bridge located in the city of Girona, Catalonia, Spain. This bridge is noteworthy for its architectural and engineering significance, as it was designed by none other than Gustave Eiffel, the same engineer who famously designed the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The Pont de les Peixateries Velles is an iron bridge, featuring an intricate lattice-work design that is characteristic of many structures designed by Gustave Eiffel. The bridge's design is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. It was constructed in 1876 during a period of significant urban development in Girona. The bridge was originally intended for pedestrians and vehicles. It is painted a distinctive red color, which is one of its most recognizable features. The Pont de les Peixateries Velles offers excellent views of the colorful houses along the riverbanks and is a popular spot for tourists to take photographs of Girona's picturesque scenery.

The Pont de les Peixateries Velles was designed by Gustave Eiffel and it is a metallic bridge with red paint. It offers some nice views but there is nothing special. If you are walking around the city you can just have a quick 5 minute visit.

Of the numerous crossings of the Onyar this is likely the most famous and endearing. Intricate metal work painted a vivid red earns it the moniker of Eiffel.

Gorgeous reflections in the water of the brightly painted houses on both sides is another highlight.

This is a city of so many beautiful buildings and structures but I wouldn’t class this as one of them. In amongst the ornate stonework this is almost a metal cage across the river.

Still, it is certainly a talking point and we used it many times during our stay.

It was built by the same company that built the Eiffel Tower and dates back to 1876. It connects the old and the new tone and makes a great place to take photos from.

Such a beautiful place to stay and quite a bit to see. The Eiffel bridge was unknown to me and it's built by the man who built the tower in Paris! I only went to Girona because of the bridge because I saw a photo in a travel mag where it looked like the metal was filled with stained glass. Obviously photoshopped but it didn't matter because the rest of the town made up for it.

One of the most favorite locations among tourists. The bridge is a red metal structure - which is why the structure is sometimes called the "red beam bridge" - was installed to replace the old bridge in 1877 with the same purpose: to connect the old city of Girona with the new one, where it is located right next to the bridge on the opposite bank market.

One of the many bridges spanning the River Onyar in Girona. This is the Pont de les Peixateries Velles, but sometimes known as the Eiffel Bridge because it was designed by Compagnie des Établissements Eiffel, 10 years before the same company built the Eiffel Tower, so better name recognition.

It's a somewhat nondescript bridge other than the distinctive latticework layout of the barriers and roof of the bridge. Not a must-see in Girona, but you do get nice views over the River Onyar from the bridge.

One of the many pedestrian bridges from the new town over the river to the old town.

There are other “prettier” bridges but this particular one is maybe the most famous because it was designed by Gustav Eiffel and is built where the four rivers meet.

It is an ideal spot for taking photos of the old town with its magnificent cathedral and colourful painted houses.

Walking across the Eiffel's red bridge from Rambla de la Llibertat, admiring the beautiful dance of coloured reflections in the river below the Onyar houses, a beautiful selection of glass items come into view in a shop window just at the end of the steps. This shop is called nou taller de vidre, which means nou glass workshop in Catalan, is an amazing creative space dedicated to local crafts specialising in glass making.

Girona is a magical and culturally rich place, a joy to spend time in especially after the busy experience of Barcelona. Everything in nou taller de vidre is individually made by local artists creating original, unique pieces from contemporary jewelery, glassware, and glass pictures to a selection of textile items too. You even have the opportunity to see the two artists at work, melting the crystal glass with the torch, which is amazing to see.

A great place to buy a true hand-crafted souvenir, a memory of this creatively inspiring place. It is definately worth the visit!!

It is one of the bridges that connect old city of Girona with the modern city. It gives a clue of colour between the buildings as it is full in red colour. As material they used steel, just like eiffel tower. It is a nice choice to visit it!

The Onyar River is particularly attractive with colourful houses that run along the length of the river in central Girona and to complete the spectacle is the Eiffel Bridge which does not look out of place given its surroundings. It was constructed by Gustave Eiffel before the Eiffel Tower was erected in Paris.
