Girona and Costa Brava Small Group Tour from Barcelona

689 reviews
Checking off the medieval city of Girona and villages of Costa Brava in a day from Barcelona is a big ask if you're doing it independently. This tour lets you scratch both off your list with no transportation worries—whisking you to Girona and two other historical towns you might otherwise easily miss. Plus, there’s a guide to bring the sights to life and an opportunity to swim at a Costa Brava cove.

Full of great works of Cataluna. 40 minutes from Barcelona by Renfe. Souvenir shops is tiny. No catalogues of the artworks, but taking picture is allowed. The famous "Tapestry of Creation" is in the treasury room of the Cathedral. Common ticket of the Basilica-Cathedral-Museum is available on the official site of the Girona Cathedral.

We really enjoyed this visit - some lovely pieces and it just keeps going up and up in a gorgeous building! Slightly disappointing to see the audio guides on our way out - we were not offered these despite being about the only visitors at the time!

How many capitals ( or capitell in Catalan, the decorative top portion of a pillar or column) or different interpretations of Madonna and child sculptures can you stomach at a time? This will more or less determine your experience of the Girona museum of art which encompasses the bulk of religious icons, panels, reliquary and items of a liturgical nature. After floor upon floor of these do you get a few vintage landscapes but nothing vaguely contemporary. On the occasion we visited, we were rewarded with two temporary exhibitions after all that tedious monotony : the surrealist political statements of Argentine artist Juan Batlle Planas and the dreamy portraits and landscapes of pioneering Polish artist Mela Muter. The Wifi also doesn't work in most of the halls but the one civilised element is the coffee lounge (housing a dispensing machine only) with comfy sofas and toilet facilities.

I prefer art from the 1800s onwards and there is little in the collection from this time. What there is, however is good. The rest tends to be art and sculptures from churches various. There is a nice lounge with coffee machine which is nice if you need a break.

People tend to forget that, in spite of the Civil War, Catalonia kept its medieval and renaissance works of art almost intact. This museum was a surprise for me. I had never seen so many marvelous medieval representations of Mary and Jesus. All of them absolutely astonishing. The artwork of the paintings is carefully explained by the researchers in the panels next to them. They even teach you how the painting techniques changed through the centuries. Very kind funcionaries, who waited for us to buy some books even after hours.
