A highlight of our Barcelona visit
Jun 2019 • Family
I have always wanted to see a Castellers (Human Towers) performance, but once again none was scheduled during our week in Barcelona. Fortunately, we discovered the training sessions held by one group every Tues & Thurs evening at this location.
Carrer de Bilbao 212 (near Clot metro station)
We watched the entire 2 hour session from the café/bar about the practice area amazed at the spectacle we were seeing. From tiny children in protective headgear to grey haired veterans, this was a unique Catalan experience not to be missed. Everyone was so welcoming and friendly providing us with the history of the group and background of the types of towers being built. This was a highlight of our trip.

A chance to see the Castellers
May 2019 • Friends
What a stroke of luck. On our way up to have a picnic in Montjuic Park we happened upon three groups practising building their human towers. Dating back to the 18th century these groups (colles) now compete in sporting competitions yet despite the rivalry they also joined one another in the building of their towers. We watched three groups, one lot dressed in yellow one in pale blue and one bright blue. We wondered to see all ages involed from the grey haired to the sturdy youngsters and the tiny tots clad in their small crash helmets. A caller gave instructions calling the names of the next climbers to mount the tower. Each wore a wide black waist band which the climbers tucked their bare feet into for leverage. A truly brave and courageous accomplishment and such pride and bonding in the groups with celebrations of singing and dancing once the tower had been successfully built and safely dismantled. A true human feat. We found them at the junction of C Nou la Rambla and C de Blesa.

We learned so much!
Sep 2018 • Friends
We attended a reactive as there were no performances scheduled during our stay. So glad we went! Learned so much about how Castle building has evolved and what it takes.

I would caution you, that the youngest scrambling to the top will leave you with butterflies! Watching the young ones scale to the top and stop was thrilling but we were always scared.

Great use of time in the evening.

Visit and/or join a Castellers practice session
May 2017 • Solo
I´m a foreigner but have been in the Castellers de Barcelona about 3 years. Quite often tourists come to watch a practice session, and occasionally they join in, and even come with us for a weekend performance. The group is very welcoming and there is a list and photos of people who will help you integrate near the door of the venue. There is a good bar/restaurant overlooking the practice area, so you can chill out there before deciding to go downstairs. It is up to you how involved you want to get, there is no pressure, you can just assist on the outside of the Pinya or learn more technical aspects and be assigned more central positions after some practice.

What a harmonious group of all ages!
Jul 2016 • Family
We went to their weekly Tuesday practices between 7-9pm. The first half hour was a single pillar and the next 1.5 hour was a variation of 2-6? Pillars. It is interesting to note cat ladders and safety nets were provided for starters.

We were surprised to see people of all ages (from 5 or 6? to 60?) joined the practice. What a tradition!

Keep up the good work!

Such fun to watch! Highly recommend

I read about the weekly practice sessions at Carrer de Bilbao 212 (near Clot metro station) and decided to check it out - afterall, this is something uniquely Catalonian. We started off watching the younger Castellers practicing indoors with the safety net while enjoying a beer in the bar. After about 1/2 hr, the activity moved outdoors to the small courtyard. It was absolutely fascinating! Well worth it!

Definitely worth a trip to see
Jul 2016 • Couples
We popped along to see the Castellers one Thursday evening doing their practicing in the small courtyard that they use.
They were a joy to watch and we spent an hour with them, seeing 4 or 5 of their incredible towers carefully constructed and deconstructed.
The planning, team work, skill and daring were a pleasure to watch, with youngsters of perhaps just 6 or 7 years old climbing to the very top of they very stable constructions wearing their crash helmets.
Safety was taken very seriously and one tower went up a couple of story's before being halted and taken apart because it wasn't just right.
All the participants clearly thoroughly enjoyed themselves and it left me wishing that we had such a thing in the UK. This is proper wholesome family fun with a massive range of ages having fun together, it was a joy to watch.
There was a bar next to the yard which we did not use ourselves and we watched from stairs beside the Courtyard which were easily accessible from the street. You cannot see the towers being built from the street as the yard is below street level, so plan well and get your directions right before you visit. There is no charge for watching the Castellers.

Visit during la Merce Festival and see the castellers
Sep 2015
As we were flexible with our dates for travel we went at the time of the festival la Merce. This was a very good move and meant that we were able to be in the square when some seven teams of castellers built their human towers the height of the adjacent buildings. To see this close up is something I will never forget.

If you can't get to a performance, see a rehearsal
Jun 2015 • Family
A friend tipped us off to the weekly practice of the Barcelona Castellers in Clot. It's a short walk from the Metro in a neighbourhood type centre. We saw them practice with a net and without and it was exhilarating to watch. If you have the time to get a long to this it's worth the trip. The strength of those at the base and the agility of the little ones on top is amazing.
