Our large family did a private tour of Tasting Tradition in Hidden Barcelona via Airbnb. Francesc is charismatic + personable, and did a great job to make the whole experience fun for everyone. Our trip was months ago, and it remains our favorite part of our entire trip. Learning about the culture through food and drink really helped us navigate for the rest of our stay. I highly recommend this tour! go CATS!

First of all, let me explain how well we were treated when booking this tour! Thinking we were booking for a medium to large group, we paid the fee, only to hear from the manager Fabio that it was canceled because there were not enough people, BUT to try and schedule for another day. They still did not get more people (dang Covid!) but the manager reached out to me numerous times trying to organize a time we could go, even though it would only be the two of us. He contacted me by phone, email, and even called the hotel to help us make this happen. They switched from a bus to a car for the tour. Marco our driver, and Francesc our guide. We highly recommend this tour. Our guide had recently taken a 6 week class on Monserrat and there was nothing he did not know. He was informative, answered all our questions, was kind, easy going, and passionately pointed out details/stories we would never have learned without him. True, it was private, but I can say with all certainty that he would have done a fabulous job with a group also. He gave us a choice of going up the mountain in the car, tram or gondola. We chose the gondola because it seemed like the obvious choice for us. A trip in itself and the beauty was breathtaking. Francesc gave us options on how to spend free time and let us choose whether to watch the boys choir, and if we desired to touch the Black Madonna. We didn’t need to touch her but did want to watch the choir. They were wonderful, although the masks and social distancing they were required to maintain while performing, may have removed a bit of the magic. There were not plaques or signs for most of the areas so having a guide inform us of the historical, Christian, and mystical detail was necessary. I would not simply go up the mountain and wander around without Francesc as your guide! He was genuinely happy to share all his knowledge. We would not have known the timeline of when to go where without him. As we are US citizens, we also appreciated his incredibly fluent use of English. As far as this tour, we did not see it on many lists of things to do in Barcelona, but were referred by a friend who had been many many years before. It is about a 45 min drive outside the city but worth every minute. We could have hiked to mountain side chapels or up to see the hermits and their small homes. There was a small farmers market, gift shop, and a place to get refreshments. All this without removing the beauty and sacredness of the active monastery. Obviously we were thrilled with this tour and know you will not be disappointed if choosing to spend a half day with Francesc.
