Neighborhood: Barrio Gรฒtico (Barri Gรฒtic)
With its iconic, old-Europe streets and alleys, this picturesque neighborhood is the very heart of Barcelona. It blends historic artifacts from its days under Roman dominion up through the Spanish Civil War with a vibrant modern-day culture of artisan shops and authentic culinary experiences. Avid explorers will be thrilled to discover quaint terraces and plazas brought to life by the many small bars and local musicians lasting late into the night. Fashionistas will be drawn to Portal de LโAngel, which is lined with well-known brand names and smaller boutique stands.

We were amazed by this place. Everyone misses its significance! This is a palace square, the steps lead to the exit of the MUHBA museum. The entrance is difficult to find it is around the corner to the left. It is a large complex comprising of Historic vistas for fantastic photos. Historic Barcelona city exhibition and underneath this the extensive Roman ruins of the old city. Itโs a real wonder. Hardly any visitors because no one knows itโs there! Then at the end of the ruins beautiful 14th century chapel and Tinell Hall with its rather more sad history of being the place of the Spanish Inquisition. Reportedly an assassination attempt took place on the exit steps King Ferdinand 14th century. Itโs a must visit more amazing than the nearby Barcelona Cathedral. Round the corner is an even more amazing museum full of all kinds of wonderful things. My advice is go in doors around this area itโs packed full of hidden gems with all the crowds outside missing everything!

Around the cathedral, alleys are lined with old buildings.
When you turn a corner, a large space suddenly appears.
The door at the top of the stairs is the exit to the museum.
Below this square, there are Roman ruins.
We recommend combining this with a visit to the nearby Barcelona History Museum.

Barcelona is always worth a visit. Placa del Rei is impressive, as is the entire Gothic Quarter. The atmosphere is still great, even though the city has become much more commercial than it used to be. But Gaudi and the many sights are top notch.

The buildings around the square represent the architectural ensemble of the medieval era of the city of Barcelona. And thanks to its almost closed structure and possible acoustics, music concerts and shows are traditionally held on the square.

This beautiful and timeless square in the Barri Gothic is also home to the Barcelona History Museum. It is quite impressive and a reminder of the former wealth of this city.

There weren't too many people here when we visited, so it was a nice change from the crowds (uh, which we were part of) in other areas of the Barri Gotic. You can sit on the steps of the plaza and relax with a drink as you take in the history of the place where Isabela and Ferdinand supposedly welcomed Columbus back from his first trip to the New World.

This is a little court yard in the Gothic Quarter where Isabella met with Christopher Columbus when he returned.

Placa del rei dates back to the 14th century and is a beautifully preserved example of medieval architecture. Be sure to explore all of the Palau Reial Major.

A history of all the various occupations of Barcelona in one place - when you find the plaza (part of the fun of the gothic quarter is looking for buildings that you KNOW are near one another but you can't find easily because of the winding streets) make sure to keep looking until you find the museum. Its right nearby! You can also enter the church that makes up one of the walls of the plaza from the museum.
Also - near the plaza are a number of souvenir shops that sell all the usual tourist goods - magnets, t shirts, etc. If you're going to buy this type of stuff, the prices near the plaza are often HALF of what folks are selling things for on Las Ramblas.

Under the city there are ruins.I love seeing ruins so for me it was worth walking underground and seeing how a population lived thousands of years ago. There is a audio tour as well as part of the admission fee. they also give discounts to other museums in the city
