About
Explain the Modernism of the Example district of Barcelona through the three most unique houses in the city: Casa Amatller (1898-1900) by the architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch, Casa Lleó i Morera (1902-1905) by the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner and Casa Batlló (1904-1906) by the architect Antoni Gaudí.

Neighborhood: Eixample
Passing through the glorious Plaça Catalunya, you enter the newer city district of Eixample, literally translated as “extension,” which immediately becomes recognizable by its more spacious streets and elegant atmosphere. The main artery of this sizable district, Passeig de Gracia, is lined with high-end international designer stores. Not to be outdone, the glitz and glamour of this zone is perhaps best exemplified by the comfortable and lavish five-star hotels that flank the divine and modernistic buildings from some of the world’s most recognized architects such as Gaudi and Montaner.

I’ve got no idea why this attraction is name Manzana de la Discordia, or the apple of discord except that it’s an allegory to the fateful judgement of Paris in choosing the most beautiful of the Catalan Modernist buildings on this stretch of Passeig de Gracia. On this road, you can see the magnificent Casa Amatller, Casa Bonet, Casa Mulleras, Casa Lleó i Morera and Casa Batlló.
Most people will only know about Casa Batllo and reasonably so for it’s fame, but don’t know about the other fine examples of Catalan Modernism right next to it. So do keep your eyes open.
Ironically, it's easier to see all the houses on Manzana de la Discordia during winter because the trees laden leaves of the summer prevents you from getting a clear view from across the street.

The design features and hand craftmanship are unbelievable. There were no plans in the normal architecural sense and Gaudi aceived this with his personal invovlement on a daily basis. A lot of the features he personally designed and cast like the door handles upwards. You need to allow at least 2 hours or preferable half a day to take in all the detailed features. Book on line the day before and arrive early to beat the queues

We did a self guided walk to view Modernist Architecture and obviously this block of three houses emerged en route.
It is further into the centre of the city and you cannot miss it because it will be surrounded by people.
The three houses were built by three leading Modernist rivals forming one of the most famous architectural bodies of work in Barcelona.
On the far right, as you look at the houses, is Casa Lleo Morera, an ornate remodelling of an existing building by Lluis Domenech i Montaner completed in 1905.
On the far left, built by Josep Puig i Cadafalch five years earlier in 1900, is Casa Amatller. Built to resemble an extravagant version of a Dutch or Flemish step gabled house he utilised sgraffito but then enhanced it with fanciful ceramic motifs which I, personally, felt took this art to a higher level.
Finally the third house, in the middle, is Casa Battlo designed by Gaudi and completed in 1907. It is several metres taller than the other two and Gaudi's idea was to utilise the exterior to illustrate the legend of St George (who is Catalonia's patron saint) The green and blue ceramic cladding on the walls represents the dragon's scaly skin, the curved roof-top it's crested back and the balcony railings and pillars the bones of the dragon's victims. He had quite an imagination!

I was with my husband, not on tour. The area was busy, however we stepped away from where most of the people where, and my wallet & phone were taken from my purse, which I was holding against my body. Don't ask me how, I didn't feel anything. My husband was right next to me as well. BEWARE, I think it was 2 scruffy looking men in wrinkled navy suits, posing as security guards in front of 32 Morreau. WEAR A MONEY BELT!!!! IF POSSIBLE, LEAVE CREDIT CARDS, PASSPORTS, ETC. IN HOTEL SAFE.

It is just great. Every building of different style. And one is more beautiful than the other. You have to see it on your own :)

Manzana de la Discordia is made up of a few beautiful and unique casas in Barcelona, actually three of them in a row, Casa Amatller, Casa Batlló, and Casa Lleo Morera. You can find the casas on Passeig de Gracia, a major avenue in Barcelona.

But it does add to the overall Block of Discord experience.
All of Barcelona (Especially the subways) have pick pockets) so you have to be careful.
This is a must stop along your Barcelona travels.

Pickpocketed the other day right in front. Found out the same thing happened to several of our friends in this beautiful, but totally un-policed city on more than one occasion. Local police are useless and evidently laws are lax. They accept it as a daily part of life. Indefensible. Would have posted photos but cellphone was taken.
