A famous place and the final resting area for legions down the years.
Impressive memorials of all varieties are here. In the Sunday morning tranquillity it was thoughtful walking around and seeing all the heartfelt remembrances.

...in this beautiful cemetery. It is so well maintained - I know these people here are happy with those who take care of them. This must be considered the national cemetery of Catalonia. Their last president who was killed by the Nazis and Franco is here. Interestingly, he was the only head of state to be killed in WWII. He's got a beautiful little crypt. It's in the area of the cemetery I'll just speak to - but see the whole cemetery; it's amazing. This area is in a small field up against the hill on a far end of the cemetery. I bet all these other people near here are heroes for the Catalan people. I think they suffered big time under Spanish rule. Really not sure of their history. All of them are sort of buried in a line that curves towards a WWII monument basically for the Jewish Holocaust victims. There're small stones with the names of the extermination camps listed on them. Got a sign or two with English and Hebrew. Another monument towards the other end is dedicated to the Jewish volunteers who fought in the Spanish Civil War. I was so inspired coming here because of this. I was so proud too. The Catalan people kind of of connected themselves to the Jews forever by having these monuments on their sacred burial grounds. Seeing all this made up for me not being able to get too close to Montjuic Lighthouse.

Massive cemetery, we walked around for 3 hours and we reckon we covered 15-20% of this beautiful and peaceful cemetery. Barcelona is famous for her architectural style so is her cemetery. Stonewall and steps, beautiful mausoleums and tombstones with the amazing view of the sea or the city. Excellent place to be when you’re gone RIP 🪦

So much history, peace, and beauty. If you like Highgate Cemetary, Pere Lachaise, Abney Park, or Montparnasse, you'll love this.
Featuring the Fosser de la Pedrera, Miro's tomb, and loads of neo-gothic sculptures, this is a huge cemetary built on the side of a mountain with winding paths. Sepulchres the size of small chapels are dotted in and about the corridors of stacked graves. There are so many interesting features from the personal decorations and offerings loved ones have left to the huge family tombs in various styles.
It's not at all touristy, which makes it a real pleasure to wander around. Read up on the internet and download a map before you go because it's pretty much self-guided.
I got the 23 bus from Placa D'Espayna to get there and the 21 bus to get from here to the centre of Barcelona. Both were very quick journeys, but check the timetables so you don't waste half an hour waiting. I spent 2.5 hours in the cemetery, but you need more to see everything. Take water, a snack, and wear trainers. There is a decent WC, but only one!

We planned to visit since we were in this general part of the city, and I love seeing cemeteries. This one is stunning, and if you enjoy the art, beauty, history and tranquility of a cemetery, you should absolutely visit. There were tombs and crypts in all directions, and I’ve never seen a mountainside graveyard before. Every foot of space has been used, and is still being used.
Things to note: this cemetery is a far walk from the Olympic village or the Montjuic park. There doesn’t seem to be any mass transit around... and it’s an extremely hilly part of town! You need to be a strong walker to do this by foot, or plan your bus route carefully. We spent about 40 minutes walking from the Miró museum to the cemetery (downhill) and then again, uphill, all the way back up.
Still worth it!

This was high on my to do list in Barcelona and it did not disappoint. It isn’t hard to get to (Google maps will tell you where and when the closest bus is) but it goes far enough out of the main tourist spots that you’ll likely be alone when you get there. This makes it peaceful and helps to maintain the respect it deserves. (Although I did catch one lone visitor with a big camera literally climbing off a crypt...some people have no class). Anyway, the place is massive. There are maps available at the main building and an interactive screen to help you choose a route. That helps a little but if you don’t have time for a full trail you’ll just have to wander sort of blind because those maps don’t tell you what they are taking you to (one trail has artistic spots designated only by a number, no description; the other trail has historical graves and at least includes names. There is also a hybrid trail of these).
We were there for 60-90 minutes and mostly just wandered aimlessly. I can’t be certain but it felt like we saw about 5% of the place. It is massive and virtually every tomb is unique. The mausoleums are mostly huge and impressive, some the size of small chapels. Many of the more artistic tombs feature life size angels weeping, sculptures of the deceased, etc. and the hillside looks like a mosaic of tombs.
I could’ve spent many hours there. So much to see and it’s all beautiful.

When you tire of the crowds on the Passig de Garcia a visit to this cemetery will be a welcome respite.
Have your driver drop you off at the top of the hill. From here you have far reaching views of the port and the Med. Then follow the signs for either « artistic » or « historic » highlights.
The cemetery is extensive with many beautiful mausoleums and lots of wrought iron and sculptures...all in varying states of decay.
There are many places to sit along the way so bring a beverage and enjoy some quiet time.

This gorgeous cemetery is perched on a hill across from the bay and just begs to be toured. The tombs are unlike any we’ve ever seen and the history is palpable but the place has a serenity that you don’t expect. Go visit!

In a city crowded with tourists, this was the only place I went to where I was really alone. I didn't see a single other tourist and only saw a couple workers. The cemetery is beautiful, with elaborate tombs and large trees on a magnificent hillside. The best and most important part though was the Fossar de la Pedrera, a former rock quarry that became a mass grave in the late 1930s when Franco took power after the Spanish Civil War. It is estimated that Spain has more mass graves than any country besides Cambodia, and most of them are unmapped and unmarked. The Fossar has been turned into a memorial for those who are buried there, and also contains memorials to the men and women of the CNT who died fighting against fascism, to the volunteers of the International Brigades during the Civil War, and to victims of the Holocaust all across Europe. It is a tranquil, beautiful, haunting, inspiring, and devastating space that deserves more recognition.

After visiting Barcelona 20 years ago and driving by this cemetery on my way out of town I have longed to return and explore. I had that opportunity and was completely amazed. I saw just a small portion of the cemetery and it was heaven.
You can take a bus and get dropped off at the top and walk down or vice versa. I drove and parked at the office. I walked up through several terraces of an abundance of amazing sculptures. You could easily spend all day here and not see it all. The array of examples of funerary sculptures is abundant.
it is really a peacful and beautiful place. If you enjoy visiting old cemeteries this one is not to be missed.
