Neighborhood: Eixample
Passing through the glorious Plaça Catalunya, you enter the newer city district of Eixample, literally translated as “extension,” which immediately becomes recognizable by its more spacious streets and elegant atmosphere. The main artery of this sizable district, Passeig de Gracia, is lined with high-end international designer stores. Not to be outdone, the glitz and glamour of this zone is perhaps best exemplified by the comfortable and lavish five-star hotels that flank the divine and modernistic buildings from some of the world’s most recognized architects such as Gaudi and Montaner.

- Curious039794066151 contributionAmazing family experienceMy family of 5 just had a cooking class with Marta. It was AMAZING. I could not have asked for a better time. So personable being in her house sharing stories. I learned a lot and cannot wait to go back for another class with other family members. I highly recommend Marta. A great family environment which is exactly what I wanted.Visited February 2024Traveled with familyWritten February 17, 2024
- Amy GRedwood City, California2 contributionsFantastic class taught in English, definitely recommend! We were recommended Marta’s class by a friend and it was fantastic! In addition to cooking paella, we learned about its history, the motivation behind the ingredients, and had a lovely conversation with Marta. We cooked the paella in her apartment which made for a comfortable and intimate experience. It was easy to get in touch with her and she was very responsive. If you have three hours to spare, I definitely recommend you come to a class! You’ll walk away with not only a tasty lunch, but also an experience and skills for life.Visited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten February 24, 2024
- Colleen BWinnipeg, Canada4 contributionsPaella with Marta’s. best experience ever.Marta,s paella cooking class was so much fun. Paella was the best we ever had. Class was interactive and we all had a part in cooking and preparing paella. Her passion and knowledge about Barcelona was so informative. I would highly recommend doing Marta’s paella cooking class as a couple or friends, we did as 3 sisters, truly was the highlight of our visit to Barcelona.Visited November 2023Traveled with familyWritten February 25, 2024

I certainly understand the prior raving reviews. We all participated in the preparation of the Paella. I highly recommend Marta as your instructor.Visited March 2024Traveled with familyWritten March 22, 2024
- Viajero-LatinoBogota, Colombia215 contributionsThe best experience! And you take away the learning!Taking Marta's class is like having an aunt in Barcelona who invites you to her house with friends to learn how to prepare paella. I went alone, since I was visiting the city and I was able to share with a group with whom we spent a very pleasant afternoon. Marta involved the entire group in preparing the paella and explained the tasks step by step, as well as sharing the techniques she used. In addition to having a very good experience, the flavor of the paella was spectacular, so the closing of the activity is to enjoy an excellent plate of paella. Everyone brings their own drinks, so a good bottle of wine and a bottle of water is recommended. The coordination of the date and time is done in advance by mail and the instructions to get to Marta's house are clear and precise. Marta speaks Spanish and English so conversations flow with the vast majority of people. The entire activity takes 3 hours. This is an unmissable plan in Barcelona!Visited March 2024Traveled soloWritten March 25, 2024
- Flyer379406723741 contributionNot just paella, GOOD paellaThis was my first time booking a cooking class while traveling, and let me tell you I am HOOKED. It felt like a class, an immersive cultural exchange, and a socializing event all at once! I don't know about anyone else, but I REALLY prioritize food while I travel - I get to learn and experience a lot of a culture through their food and customs, but now I think I was missing out by not taking cooking classes sooner. Marta was an excellent host and teacher, answering all of our questions and giving us detailed explanations of each step with some history about Barcelona along the way. Make sure to take notes though! She provides a recipe to take home but there were some excellent tips she also spoke on to really bring your paella to the next level! Originally we were supposed to have a class with another party, but they had to cancel so she gave us an option to take a private class with just our group by paying an additional fee if we still wanted to take the course and I'm so glad we did. It was split between 4 people so it was still extremely affordable and it felt very cozy, but I'm sure having additional people there would also have been a great opportunity to meet other travelers! 100% something I would recommend to others for a fun activity to do in Barcelona, it was one of our highlights of our trip!Visited April 2024Traveled with friendsWritten April 18, 2024

A great opportunity to experience the secrets of homemade paella at its best. Marta was the quintessential hostess and teacher for a group of 4 couples who together succeeded at whipping up a savory version of this locally-sourced regional dish. We all learned much about not only how to procure and prepare the components of this tasty classic but learned much about the history of the dish, the region and its history, Marta's personal story and about each other during the few hours we shared together in the setting of her lovely home.
Don't miss this unique experience when you're in Barcelona; the only regret you will have is if you don't do it!

What a treat this Paella is!
Marta clearly has a gift for enhancing this traditional Valencian dish and explaining some of its secrets with impeccable English.
We chose the Mountain Paella (with meat, mushrooms, mini artichokes). But it also offers traditional seafood.
Highly recommended.

I take my university student group to Marta every time I visit Barcelona. It's a great experience to learn how to make an authentic and delicious paella. We've been visiting Marta each year for around 6 years now and I think her experience is a wonderful introduction to the local feel of the Eixample neighborhood through the lens of someone who is a native Catalonian. I would highly recommend Marta's cooking class to anyone (even if you've never cooked before).

Barcelona offers countless gems to explore, from the iconic Sagrada Familia and the charming Gothic Quarter to the sun-soaked beaches. But for an authentic taste of the city, Marta’s is where you’ll truly experience the heart of Barcelona. The warmth, the flavors, and the stories make it unforgettable. Bring a bottle of good wine—Marta’s table is where you’ll feel like family, sharing laughter and incredible food that embodies the soul of this vibrant city. It’s more than a meal; it’s a memory you’ll cherish.

This very fun and informative cooking class was a highlight of our trip to Barcelona! Marta is great fun, and taught us so much more than just how to cook paella. We learned about some of the history of Barcelona, the different cultural areas of Spain, and the history of paella itself.
We all participated in slicing, dicing, and adding the ingredients to Marta’s giant paella pan, then all sat down together to enjoy the meal when it was ready. I left feeling like I not only learned how to make paella for my friends and family at home, but also learned so many interesting things about Barcelona and the rest of Spain. This was a great cultural experience!

This was truly a memorable experience during our trip to Barcelona. We set this up by emailing Marta a few weeks before our trip. We had 2 families traveling together comprising of 4 “adults” and 5 young people (high school and college students). It was a nice “change of pace” activity after days of walking and sightseeing. We walked over to Marta’s for lunch after finishing our Segway tour at Passeig Lluis Companys 10. It was an easy 15 minute walk.
Marta greeted us into her apartment and laid out a set of fresh ingredients, ready to be transformed into delicious paella! She explained the importance of each ingredient and went through the cooking process. Each member of the group was given a task (i.e. chopping vegetables, cutting meats, sprinkling seasoning etc). We cooked all the ingredients in a big pan…following Marta’s method. In the end, we had a tasty and visually stunning dish. Everyone enjoyed cooking, eating and talking to Marta about her life in Barcelona. Some in the group thought this was the best activity during the trip!
Thank you for a great time, Marta!

This class was great. I'm from Barcelona but I went with my girlfriend who doesn't speak much Spanish or Catalan to improve a little bit as we get the pella (the class is in English), and I have to say that the one we did with Marta is one of the best I've tried. Being somewhat more focused on foreigners I had some doubts before going, but his paella has nothing to envy that of good restaurants in Barcelona. He is also a very nice person who is interested to know a little about his guests, and who explains everything step by step and very clearly. Very grateful for the experience!

Marta was simply amazing. Engaging, funny, warm, and welcoming. It was a beautiful mix of fun conversations, activities, and great food. Her prior experiences from teaching really enhanced her ability to teach her cooking expertise to the entire group - two families of adults, teenagers, and twenty year olds. 3 hours went by so quickly and culminated with the best Paella we had in Barcelona. Now we feel like we can bring a great Paella dish back to California. Thank you for this special memory, Marta! Muchas Gracias!

Marta is a very interesting and engaging person, a great cook, and a great teacher! Instead of a sterile classroom environment, Marta hosts you at her apartment and takes you through each step of the paella making process. You can participate in the prep and cooking or just have some wine and watch and learn. It was so special meeting a real local Barcelonan and sharing our life experiences. She uses whatever fresh ingredients were available at the market that day (which she explains makes this somewhat non-traditional paella), but wow does it taste good! You’ll leave with a full belly, a thorough recipe, and pictures and memories to treasure. Thanks Marta!

Some experiences are good, others are great. Marta’s paella cooking class was in the EXTRAORDINARY category! If you want a unique learning experience, this is it. Marta welcomed my daughter, two other people and me into her home and taught us how to make paella. She told us a little about her background, explained what we were going to do, and then guided us through the process. We cut the food, helped to cook it, did the clean-up, and enjoyed a delicious meal. By the end of the evening, I felt like I had three new family members. It was a delightful, fun, and educational time. If you are looking for an amazing learning opportunity with a local person, book Marta’s Private Paella Class!

Marta - I was looking to send you a Facebook message, but the page I found wouldn’t allow me send one. My family and I traveling to Barcelona the week of Nov 3-10 (we are looking at the Nov 5, 6 or 7 more specific). and were wondering if you were: 1) still offering paella cooking classes in your apartment; 2) had available days and times (ideally in the early afternoon) during that week; 3) cost per person; and. 4) would we be the only ones in attendance? How big are the paella classes? We have two adults and two kids 9 and 8 years old. Our kids love seafood and I see this as a fun experience. Thank you for letting me know the answers to those questions. Also if there is a good way to follow up (email or actual Facebook account), please let me know. Amanda

Hi Marta, my son and I attended your paella class in the summer of 2018 and we both had a great time and enjoyed the paella. Bryce and I have talked about recreating your recipe many times but just haven’t gotten around to it. He is finishing graduate school in July of 2021 and we are planning a huge party to celebrate. We want to make your paella the centerpiece of the party, but I have lost the recipe instructions that you gave us. Is it possible to get those instructions again?
