Neighborhood: El Born / La Ribera
The labyrinth that is El Born becomes most apparent the moment you turn down one of its side streets. But this is one of the few labyrinths you might actually enjoy losing your way in. After all, there are few places that live and breathe such exciting energy regardless of the time of day. This neighborhood seamlessly transcends the old and new parts of the city, reflected in its vast array of restaurants ranging from fancy Michelin-star establishments to trendy fusion restaurants. Here you'll find historical and cultural attractions such as the popular Picasso Museum and the Gothic cathedral La Santa Maria del Mar, where you just might be able to catch a traditional Catalan wedding.
How to get there

Intriguing mask selection
Feb 2019
This was on our way to the MEAM Museum, just down the street. We purchased a mask with three faces which is ending up in my paintings. A must see!

Lots of masks to choose from and they actually use them in ceremonies

We buy masks from all over the world and this shop just happened to be down the street from our hotel...I went in and asked the lady the different prices and the different styles and she was very knowledgeable and spoke English very well...We picked out an interesting mask and she packaged it so well so that it wouldn't get crushed in our hand luggage for the trip back to the US...Highly recommend if you're in the market for a mask!!!! Also, the young lady was actually working on one when we walked in...

Marvellous ! The place of dreams ( and nightmares !)
40 years of traditional papier-mâché mask making . From Venetian to carnival , theatre to macabre . Anna was happy to let us try on at our leisure & was most helpful . That's Halloween sorted ..

What an amazing experience entering another world once we stepped inside this beautiful shop. The staff are wonderful and very patient as we tried on endless handmade carnaval masks, as we played and laughed.... such joy!I was looking for that special gift for my son who has entered the theatre world. They also shared some local knowledge of the best place to eat where we had a delicious authentic Catalonia meal. Thank you so much. Gracias!

Nice to see family owned business like this one

You cannot miss it, beautiful shop. Would upload photos but they do not allow pictures to be taken in store. These lovely hand made masks are a dying art. You could be cheap made in China fakes or the real deal. Most are made of gesso from moulds and all are hand painted but a group of artists who work together. Would definitely buy more the next time I'm in Barca.

No other shops I know stock original Zanni masks, the plague doctor masks (the one with the really long beak designed to 'prevent disease' and the bauta masks too. These are serious carnival masks.. not for the average costume party.
The also do fun ones and half face masks too.
Small ones range from EUR20 upwards. Very reasonable considering the time it takes a person to make these.

Beautiful Handmade Masks
Apr 2015 • Couples
I think the name of this place is Arlequi Mascares. It is a family owned business with a magnificent array of handmade masks. As you walk in it has an amazing ambiance. Seeing all the various masks on the walls gives a sense of magic. Must see if you get the chance.

Handmade Masks in Barcelona
A magical place with the most amazing masks made by the lovely young woman whose family owns the store. One of the highlights of our visit to Barcelona.
