If you are looking for a food tour in Barcelona, look no further. The Aborigens food tour was a perfect orchestration of Catalan culture through local markets, shops and food houses interwoven with stories of local Catalan life. Our family did the vermouth tour with 2 young children, and the whole family had an outstanding time. Francesc has a very warm and easy going personality and made the tour feel like a walk through town with a close friend. We will make sure to contact Aborigens the next time we are in Barcelona.

Of the 15+ food tours I’ve been on The Beyond Tapas tour was hands down the best food tour. What really sets this tour apart is that it felt so authentic without a scripted itinerary vs other tours where it’s very clear they go to the same pre-set places every time. Secondly, I appreciated Francesc’s deep knowledge and passion for the food, culture, and politics of Catalonia. When I make it back to Spain I absolutely want to do one of their culinary vacations.

We were new to this type of experience and to be honest I was apprehensive. I’m not inclined to enjoy being led.
But man was I wrong. Looking back I have incredible respect for Alex and how this trip was put together.
Every day offered new and engaging events. Not only was Alex great but the hosts we were introduced to were also engaging and genuinely welcoming.
The only problem is Alex set the bar so high I can’t imagine a better experience. Oh you that and the 10 pounds I gained.

Alex took our family on a wonderful tour of the Sants neighborhood. We couldn’t have asked for a better host. We learned so much and ate very well. He was incredibly kind to our 10–year-old son, who was completely engaged throughout the tour. Don’t hesitate—book him!

Truly the highlight of my visit to Barcelona! A must do if you want a true local food and cultural experience!
We wound up having to do a private tour since no one else reserved and I think our experience was even better as a result. Francesc our guide is a local food journalist and was super friendly and very knowledgable in catering the tour to whatever culinary interests you have. Even if you don't normally eat a lot of adventurous food, go with an open mind and try what the local Catalans eat - I had my first ever anchovies, escargot, and veal/mussel meatballs in squid ink. All delicious!
Francesc took us to several places off the beaten path, almost all of which I would have never gone into on my own since I don't speak the language. But in every instance it was incredible and everyone was super friendly. The food and drink pairings were things I would have never otherwise tried and I loved every one of them! I can't stop saying enough good things about this tour!

Our trip to Barcelona in May was greatly enhanced by the personalised insider accompaniment of the Aborigens team. We had a superb market tour and I believe rather exceptionally, an exclusive home cooked meal with the ingredients bought at market. We also had the unforgettable experience of a breakfast rendezvous in one of the traditional market restaurants that served locally sourced and produced dishes I'd never heard of before (and would rarely consider for breakfast!) Excellent service and amiable, cultured company.

This was a fantastic food tour. I took this tour with my husband, brother and sister. Alex was of course very knowledgeable and has an obvious passion for sharing the joys of good food with others. We went to six stops in total. The first stop we went to was a small bar that served vermouth. It was really good. At the end of that tasting, Alex said "I am not really sure where to take you next". At first I was a bit worried that maybe this was not going to be a good tour. However, my temporary moment of uncertainty was unfounded. Unlike many other food tours I have taken, Aborigens is not a set food tour with all stops already planned out. It appeared to me that Alex personalized parts the tour after he met the group. This is a sign of a very good, knowledgeable guide! In our group, some people where interested in beer. So Alex too us to a brewery. There were also people interested in having something sweet after all the seafood and pork dishes. So Alex took us to get something sweet. The tour also lasted much longer than the advertised 4 hours as Alex was so generous with his time. One of our most favorite things we tasted was the bomba at Mortiz. We liked it so much we went back there our last night in Barcelona for more!

Gràcies Ashley, Since we started almost 4 years ago we decided not to offer cookie-cutter tours and to give a real meaning to a "local experience". That improvisation you mention is part of it and could'nt be possible without the time and passion we have for Catalan gastronomy. Come back soon and keep supporting FC Barcelona from Qatar. Salut! Àlex D.

We had randomly found Aborigens online about a week prior to our 5-day escape from work/baby/life trip to Barcelona. We are all about nailing down at least one authentic activity while in a city, especially one such as Barcelona. Tapas/pinchos/sangria is great, but does it truly speak to local culture?
We met Cesc as scheduled the night prior to our journey home to Boston. He was timely (as expected given the professional booking) and personable. If you're giving a local tour, be it food or culture or both, you must exude a certain level of personality and gregariousness, yes? Cesc was immediately 'likeable,' and having committed to this tour somewhat blindly, this immediately appeased any uncertainty we'd had.
Foodies or not, if you are interested in a true Catalonian experience, sign up. From the initial meeting to the first stop to the final stop...nothing but gastronomical and social enjoyment. Cesc and Alex conduct true tours - they plan itineraries as anyone would, but they modify based on their recent experience as well as guest and local feedback. Cesc took us first to the Moritz brewery/restaurant, where he smoothly ordered beer and an appetizer for each in Catalan, all the while describing all to the tour guests and answering the plethora of tour guest questions. Having not had any beer during our trip (my husband had), I was happy to have saved my beer drinking til the brewery bottles, and enjoyed it thoroughly. The appetizer, whatever it was, apparently a traditional Catalonian dish of fried meaty garlicky goodness, hit the palate gracefully and deliciously, and sent us off hungrily to the next stop. The second stop was a bodega, traditional in its tiny, rough, 'stop in here if you care/otherwise no loss' demeanor. While Cesc deposed us on the wonderful history of the Catalonian bodegas, including an explanation on the wine taps at the wall and the barrels beneath, the owner prepared us plates of anchovy-stuffed olives, thin-sliced fresh pork that might turn almost any vegetarian, tomato and oil drenched bread, and anchovies. Not only those delicious bites however, but the out-of-nowhere Catalonian vermouth with lime and anchovy-stuffed olives, won us over (as if we needed it). Apparently, beyond the farmer wine tap tradition we saw firsthand, the bodegas serve a vermouth unlike any an American would pour into his dirty martini. Who knew? Who would've known but for this tour? Amazing. Straight-up.
Next stop - restaurant, where Cesc ordered a nice organic local white wine (which flowed freely even following an empty bottle), raw fresh oysters for each, a plate of fried calamari (but fresher and better than the huge rings found at every tapas place), and fresh muscles. Enough to share amongst the 6 tour guests (Cesc didn't eat much and I can see why given the delicious amazing cuisine to tempt him in his everyday work), and never left us wanting for more (though if it had, Cesc would have ordered as he did more wine, water, bread). It was all delicious, and all the more so given the history and background information Cesc shared en route. We hung there for awhile and enjoyed the conversation, wine, and food.
Next stop - local bar a bit bigger than the bodega, but personalized attention and catering. We had snails, blood sausage, a cheese plate, local wine, and yes - as requested, water! Personally, I am not a huge beef/pork eater, as I am passionate about fitness and health; however, I was turned...I really was. I couldn't help myself from eating and eating this meat...literally couldn't stop.
Final stop - similar to tapas bar we had frequented during our vacation, but local and legit sure as the owner's wife cooked fresh each dish. This might have served as our final tour stop, but we stayed a looong time, with Cesc ordering more and more, even to tour guests' requests for dessert, including chocolate, water, because we needed it at that point, and whatever else...We had amazing dishes fresh at the bar counter such as smoked thin-sliced tuna, and also those cooked to order such as mushroom omelets and sausage mushroom plates like you wouldn't make or find domestically, fried milk balls, and other assorted delicacies as were provided us as we stared wide-mouthed at the counter.
Another aspect of this tour which complements the food, drink, and culture and which should not be overlooked is the social interaction. Not only did we enjoy the conversation and company of Cesc, but also enjoyed that with the other tour guests. Touring with guests from South Carolina to Jamaica, we from Boston had a wonderful final evening out with other people looking to get the most out of a vacation to a new city, and the tour provided a great forum for meeting new people and enjoying a fine evening out.
This is a great idea and a great tour all around...we would have regretted spending our final evening in Barcelona in any other way. We wish Cesc, Alex, and the Aborigens company all the best in its endeavor.

If you want to escape the tourist traps and experience Barcelona with a local, this is a perfect option. I took the Evening Tour and the Outer Food Tour. I visited places and tried food & wine that I would not know of, find or try, unless with a local. The tours included only a small number of people, so it created a more personal and friendly atmosphere.

The Evening Tour was at a relaxed pace and felt more like a small group of friends out on a Friday night. All venues were great and we tasted some traditional and modern dishes. When with a local you tend to be more confident to try different food & drinks that you normally may not.

The Outer Food Tour is an all-day event and an opportunity to visit the countryside to experience some traditional & regional produce. My only regret is that I could not possibly eat anymore by the end of the day. The regional produce, the wines and the friendly locals all created a highly enjoyable and memorable day.

Alex & Alex were so friendly and happy to share their knowledge of Catalan cuisine and life in Barcelona & Catalonia. Highly recommended.

If you are a bit of a culinary adventurer like myself this tour should be the very first thing you do, a lovely introduction to the Catalan cuisine in the most rustic of ways. Your guide will take you to one of Barcelona's greatest treasures, the Bodegas. This is a fantastic way to try the real cuisine of the region. One caution, if you have food aversions this tour is not for you! We tried things like tripe (which was amazing), langoustines, anchovies of all types and many other lovely foods, not terribly exotic but definitely a stray from the average American palate. My critique is that the guide catered a bit too much the person in the group with an aversion to MANY food types, in my eyes this stunted our tour. So I will stress again, if you have aversions to trying new food types or are less adventurous, this is not the tour for you. I also felt that the pictures on the website and Facebook are a bit deceiving for what we actually experienced. Our guide was pleasant and knowledgable with a good sense of the history.

Sara, I'm Àlex. Thanks for sharing your views! That's what keeps us motivated to improve day after day. First of all, I'm really sorry if you could have felt a little unattended because that's one of my main fears! We try to keep the groups as small as possible for this reason, to be able to chat and to talk about food and everything else about Catalonia with all you. But you know, maybe some days we are more inspired than others, if this was the case, so sorry... About the person with "food issues", I have to say that we constantly have people who are gluten intolerant, that have allergies or religious problems with beef or pork and other strange things you couldn't believe (and often a group with a little bit of everything!). In all those cases, our attitude is to add, never to substract, so we add more food to cater specifically for those people, but as I say, always adding food, never spoiling the others experience. At least that's what we try! One last thing about pictures on facebook and other social media, we do many tours, for professionals, private tours, countryside tours and we even post what we eat once in a while, but we always try to add an accurate description of which of those categories the picture belongs to. Even though, we change the places we visit quite often because we like freshness and we love to show you what's been exciting us lately, we don't clone tours, so you get a fresh experience when you do a tour with us, meaning that you can stumble into one of the dishes pictured or not.. What we try is to make every experience unique as much as we can, that's why we never say no to another bottle of wine, to another bite, and that's why that night, for example, we went to 7 and not 5 places ;) Thanks again and take care! à.
