This was a wonderfully unexpected find in wandering through the Gothic Quarter, and I would highly recommend for anyone who loves gothic cathedrals! It feels more intimate, a bit less imposing, than your typical cathedral, and it boasts a beautiful rose window that is closer and more visible than for your normal. The whole cathedral has a lighter and airier vibe that is very surprising in the best way. You're also allowed to visit the cathedral's small garden - the garden itself isn't much to look at, but very much feels like an oasis in the middle of an otherwise busy neighborhood. The stars, though, are the two cats that rule the space - just another wonderful surprise to come upon!

Just adding a couple of 'extras' about this lovely church. Check to see if there is a concert advertised at the entrance... When I was visiting they were selling discounted tickets in the hours before the concert (I caught a fantastic flamenco guitar concert in the Capella by Ekaterina Zaytseva). Also, don't miss the Gegants i capgrossos in the glass case just inside the main doors on the right. These figures date back to 1601 at Maria del Pi, but the Catalan tradition of giant figures probably goes back as far as the 13th century. Similar figures are found in other parts of Spain and in Flemish and Portuguese festivals. Outside the church, check out the architectural details in neighbouring buildings. On the weekends there is an art exhibition / market that has been going since 1975 and you can meet the artists. Plenty of tapas bars with tables in the square to choose from too.

It is one of the great religious buildings in Barcelona. In Gothic style, it was inaugurated in the middle of the 15th century. It has a single floor plan and impressive dimensions with side altars that are attached between the gaps in the buttresses.
On the outside, the bell tower and the rose window stand out. It is interesting to remember that the rose window is from the last century, reconstructed based on existing photographs of the previous and original one.

Dominating the Placa it’s a supreme Gothic edifice. A marvellous main façade has superb stone work particularly around the entrance way.
Stepping in is awe inspiring. With a superlative vista from the rear along the nave to the altar, it is a marvellous experience just standing and admiring.
Soaring columns reach for the lovely vaulted ceiling in stone. Stained glass windows bring a glowing light inwards.
A great Rose Window is one of the highlights. Numerous exquisite holy items are to be seen in the Treasury, including a monstrance and chalices.

This church was at the end of the street where we stayed, so we went in for a short visit. From the outside it wasn't much to look at from our end, but inside was quite a surprise.
Inside, the church has beautiful stained glass windows and different sections with vaulted ceilings and little chapels between the pillars.

This 14th century church is not a ‘must-see’ but it is only a 3 or 4 minute walk from the Cathedral so if you have some spare time, it is worth stopping by. It is located in Placa del Pi, an historic and attractive square.
I’d recommend checking the opening hours before you go. We walked past often because it was very close to our accommodation and it often looked shut. I popped in as soon as I saw the doors open.
It is a dark, heavy Gothic looking church. The big multi-colored rose window in the centre cannot be seen properly from the outside because it is covered with a mesh cloth of some kind.
The best bit about the church is inside. As you step through the main entry door, on your right is a curious display of ‘Giants’. It is worth popping in just to see these. The 4 truly massive figures were used in street parades and feast days. The two biggest date from 1601. They have always been associated with this particular church and were hidden here for a long time in the bell tower. If you look closely, you can see the name ‘Pi’ and the pine tree symbol on the chest armour of the largest male figure.
The pine tree is significant because it acknowledges that fact that there has been a pine tree out the front of this church since 1568 (hence the name). The tree has been replaced but one has always stood in exactly the same spot for centuries.
As you leave the church, if you look directly across the square, you will see the pretty pink Traders Guild which is decorated in the traditional sgraffito style. It is covered with white garlands and cherubs – worth a photo.
The weekend is the best time to go. A small local artisans’ food market is held out the front of the church on the first & third weekend (the honey and handmade candles were very tempting). Painters also have a small market around the side of the church on weekends.
NOTES: You can pay to climb the tower with a guide. We didn't do this but only because I didn't know you could until later.

The current Gothic cathedral was built between 1319-1320 and 1391. The cathedral was originally built in the Catalan Gothic style. The building survived two earthquakes in 1373 and 1428, which resulted in damage. The cathedral has been restored several times.
In 1928, Pope Pius XI awarded the Church of Santa Maria del Pi the title of Papal Minor Basilica. During the Civil War in 1936, the cathedral was destroyed and later restored.

You’ll find far fewer tourists than the Cathedral of Barcelona, and a much quieter environment than La Sagrada Familia. This beautiful interior with stunning stained glass was completed in 1453, but the foundation dates to 1319, and the cemetery dates to 1074! Come here if you want to escape the crowds and enjoy a quiet church. It might just be my favorite in all of Barcelona!

The entrance was open around 8pm, so we walked inside and took a look. Spooky, eerie quiet and cold inside with low light. Quite dark. Really old, bare stone inside church. Need to call ghostbusters. We stayed inside for 5 mins, just taking in the atmosphere

Europe has so many great basilicas and this is another for that list. I wouldn’t say it’s a must see but it’s very near Las Ramblas and hard to miss if you’re in the gothic quarter. I honestly don’t recall there being a fee for us to go inside, or if there was it was very small. So I don’t think there is a reason to miss this one, inside or out.
