When you get tired of the hustle and bustle and the crowds of La Rambla, and trust me you will eventually, you begin to look for a place to relax and regroup for a short time. Fortunately, one such place exists just off this iconic Barcelona Street, Placa Reial.
Placa Reial, or Royal Plaza is square off of La Rambla and part of the Gothic Quarter. It was designed by built in the 19th Century on the site of the demolished Capuchin Convent.
The main attraction in the square, aside from the building facades and stately palm trees is the Fountain of the Three Graces. For those interested, Gaudi whose work can be found all over the city is evident here also. The distinctive Lampposts were designed by him.
Surrounding the square are numerous restaurants and cafes where one can grab a refreshing drink or more. Some are nestled under the massive arches of the surrounding buildings providing ample shade from the sun. Others make liberal use of umbrellas for this purpose.
Final word of warning though. For those who came in here to escape the crowds of La Rambla and enjoy a relaxing drink, you had best leave before night falls. Placa Reial is home to some of Barcelona’s most popular nightclubs and after the sun goes down the area is known for its party atmosphere.

Every visit to Barcelona I find myself back in this square a little bit by accident and this time it was beckoning me whilst I was wandering in the Gothic Quarter. Through an arch those tall palm trees wave a welcome and once you are in the square the fountain is an attractive focus.
It is always good to walk along the enclosing arcades or dip fingers into the fountain.

We found Placa Reial by coincidence when we were looking for our booked restaurant near the square. Plaça Reial is located at one of the side streets of La Rambla. Despite it's not big, it is a majestic and relaxing square which its 4-sides are surrounded by traditional Spanish noble buildings with elegant porticoes and terracotta decorations. Within the square, it has a beautiful fountain, lampposts designed by Gaudi and a number of tall and beautiful tropical palm trees. Plaça Reialis also one of the most famous nightlife hubs for many locals as it hosts many lovely top restaurants, bars and outdoor venues. In my opinion, it's a MUST VISIT square when you're near La Ramba, I absolutely love it.

Truly the most beautiful square in Barcelona. Full of bars and restaurants tucked away just off Las Ramblas. It is the epitome of Barcelona in both architecture and style. There are a number of well reviewed restaurants and bars on the square and just off.

Placa Real seems like Placa Mayor (old main square) in the rest of Spain.
It's a rectangular square with many bars and restaurants at the ground level of the circling old residential buildings around it. The central part is dotted with palm trees and it is a popular meeting point.
However, I wouldn't consider having my drink or meal here, as it's a high tourist area.
Imo, it's rather a pass by, 10 min stop visit.

This is a really cool square. It looks worn out and a bit stained, but that is where its charm is. We can tell without trying that the food here is not the best as the restaurants look like tourist traps, but the vibe of the square is appealing. This place is probably good for drinks, but not for food. Someone here mentioned “secluded” and it is all but secluded. This is off Las Ramblas and nothing that is near Las Ramblas is secluded.

Close to our hotel we walked here all the time and really enjoyed the atmosphere. It's quite a large square surrounded by pretty buildings with a nice fountain in the middle. You can get a takeaway or a coffee and enjoy the surroundings.

The square was built in the 19th century, designed by Francesc Daniel Molina i Casamajo. Previously, this place was the old Capuchin monastery of Santa Madrona, which burned down in 1835. The square was originally planned to be called the "Square of the Heroes of Spain", but for political reasons it acquired its current name.

The Plaça Reial is a public square in the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona and close to the southern end of La Rambla. The whole of the square is surrounded by arcades and buildings, which reminds me a lot of Plaza Mayor in Madrid. This is a popular tourist attraction, especially at night. The plaza has a large number of cafe, restaurants and several nightclubs, including Sidecar, Jamboree, and Karma.
When you’re in the square, make sure to look out for the Gaudi designed lampposts.

It has Antoni Gaudi's first commissioned light posts. Other than that, it's similar to other square in Barcelona. It has many shops and place to eat. It's a nice place to hang out for awhile.

How safe is Plaça Reial? I stayed here in the late 90s and it was the home of drug dealers, has it improved? I want to take my kids!

We saw none of it. Plenty of high profile police from time to time. Drugs obvious in some streets nearby.
