Delightful and very thorough presentation of the history of Catalunia!
It encompasses prehistoric times, Roman then Visigoths , then Moors occupation, the Middle Ages and feudal times, Castillan domination, the Franco years, etc, up to the present day.
It features beautiful artifacts, reconstructions of typical houses and shops, and clear explanations in Catalan, Spanish and English.
Hands-on exhibits are off limits because of the coronavirus.
We were so engrossed by the history of Catalunia that we forgot to go to the rooftop 1881 restaurant...
Next time!

I found the upper floor of the museum particulary interesting as it dealt with the making of modern Barcelona, including the dreadful Civil War where Franco's suppression of Catalunya is within living memory and doubtless fuelling the independence movement. The cafe terrace on the roof is good and you can view some spectacularly vulger yachts in the harbour. Not crowded. It is located at the bottom of Las Ramblas and is free on the first Sunday of the month,

Definitely recommend this museum if you want to learn more about Catalonia. Was 6 euros and you can easily spend a couple hours here. You follow the history of the region chronologically, and the exhibits are also kid friendly and equally interesting for adults! Most information is in Catalan, Spanish and English, however some of the information about specific artefacts was not in English (but I didn't mind this, you still get the idea). Really informative, and you can end by checking you the beautiful view of the harbor from the roof! You don't need to eat at the restaurant to see it.

I loved this museum, it is probably the best I've been to in Barcelona yet. I learnt a lot about the history of Cataluña from prehistory to present day. Very interesting exhibits which I spent over 2 hours exploring. Also make sure to visit the roof top for beautiful views across the port. Would highly recommend!

The museum of Catalan history is large. Seniors with ID receive a discount. For your general admission, you can ask for headphones with a standard quarter inch jack. This will not work on the latest iPhones which use the lightning plug. However, there were no other visitors to the museum and I just used the audio speaker on my iPhone. Wi-Fi is free and you can access the audio guide online using the information provided on the second floor. The audio guide on your phone provides descriptions of selected exhibits in the museum. There is a good, good explanation for each and easy to understand.

There are extensive exhibits providing the history of this area. The rest of Spain is pretty much ignored. The museum is done very well. Signs provide explanations at every step in English.

The problem, however, was that there was no air conditioning on the 2nd and 3rd floors. With an outside temperature of 30°C (87°F), the inside of the museum was very, very hot and uncomfortable. I think this would not be a good place to bring children.

If you like this review or any of the photos, please could you give me a thumbs up? You may wish to check out my reviews of other sites to see in Barcelona, as well as another Spanish cities, and also Lisbon, Sintra, Porto, and cities in southeast Asia, South America, Australia and New Zealand.

What a gem. Didn't look in the Museo, just took the lift to the top floor and went out to the rooftop terrace.

There is a Restuarant up there, but we just found nice seats and had drinks.

Views are amazing, and it was quiet as I don't think many know about this little gem.

Barcelona has a fascinating history that goes far beyond Gaudi and FC Barca. You will get a lot more out of your trip there if you take an hour or two to browse through this museum. Located in a beautifully renovated 19th century building right on the water, the museum covers the history and culture of Catalonia from pre-historic times to the present, and also gives visitors a bit of insight into the Catalan national identity of today. While enjoyable for people of all ages, this is a great place if you have children. There are many interactive exhibits, such as a full set of (plastic) Medieval plate armor that kids can try on. For the adults, have a drink at the rooftop bar/restaurant for a great view of the city and waterfront. Plus, the entry fee is only 4 Euros for adults, which is a bit of a bargain. Don't miss!

Full disclosure - i did not visit the museum, i merely walked through it to get to the roof top bar.

Fantastic spot over looking the marina. The atmosphere was chill and wasn't invasive. It is popular though, so you may end up waiting a little for a table.
It was 14 euros for a Gin & Tonic, which i guess is more than what you would usually pay but it is a very nice spot. The service was good, i don't recall waiting too long for the drinks.

This is a very well organized museum with wonderfully organized and educational displays going from prehistory up to the 18th century. We spent a whole day here, breaking for lunch outside in the sun and then going back for the afternoon (you can leave and return the same day with the ticket). This would also be an outstanding rainy-day activity.
