- TravelKat21Bel Air, Maryland302 contributionsRainy day funGood views even on a somewhat rainy day. We took the elevator to the top of the monument. This was included as part of the Barcelona Family card. Easy, quick admission to the top. The elevator holds 4 people including the guide to the top. Small viewing section at the top. We loved the signage that points out what you are looking at in the distance. Nothing much in the lobby to look at No public restrooms.Visited March 2024Traveled with familyWritten March 25, 2024
- J EFredericksburg, Virginia11,814 contributionsColumbus StatueThe statue of Christopher Columbus is here, in this area. It’s a congested area with pedestrians and vehicles and it's close to a main bus and train station on the water. Just like many other areas and things in the city, vandals have tagged portions of it with their nasty graffiti.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 4, 2024

It is a monument dedicated to Christopher Columbus, about this statue there are many theories about what and where it points to. I recommend going to visit it as it is close to many important attractions.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 27, 2024

You can climb to the top by lift, 60 meters high, to enjoy a panoramic view of the sea, the port and the rooftops of Barcelona. This unique vantage point offers a magnificent view of the city. - Alina LTel Aviv, Israel203 contributionsChristopher Columbus MonumentDedicated to the traveller and discoverer Christopher Columbus, this monument can be found walking along the Boulevard Rambla, facing the Plaza Portal de la Pau in Barcelona. The impressive monument, 60 meters high, was built for the 1888 World's Fair and is located in the place where Columbus returned from his first voyage to America. It is a reminder that Columbus visited Queen Isabella I and King Ferdinand II in Barcelona. The monument located on the square consists of three parts: a statue, a column and pedestal. The navigator himself is made in the form of a bronze statue, it is the fruit of the skill of the sculptor Rafael Atche. The sculpture stands 7 meters high, with a geographic map held in her right hand, and her left hand pointing to the sea. There is a statue of Columbus on a Corinthian metal column, topped by four bronzed female images, each symbolizing a different continent of the world: Europe, Asia, Africa and America. -More information can be found on the website - which I will link to below. Inside the column of the monument is an elevator, climbing which you can see an amazing panorama of the historical part of the city, as well as the sea and mountains. Alas, we never dared to go upstairs - after a good look at the monument outside.Visited October 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten December 22, 2024
- David OGeneva, Switzerland5,068 contributionsAll right.Even if it doesn’t look like it, it remains the central point of Barcelona’s old town. The departure of the Rambla and the port of Barcelona. This great monument remains visitable. At the very top, there is the statue of Christopher Columbus, with his finger, he indicates America, finally, the Caribbean. To say that he could have met another Italian who lived at the same time and in the same town, namely Govanni Cabotto, who would listen to the accounts of the sailors and later introduce himself to the English court to become an explorer himself, under his new name, John Cabot.Visited December 2024Traveled soloWritten January 10, 2025

Initially dismissed this attraction as just another place to view the city but used a 2-4-1 tourist voucher and took advantage of the wine cellar offer so only cost 8 euros for the two of us.
A speedy lift took us to the top and there's a circular viewing area to walk around to get panoramic views of the city and along the coast. If you're not good with heights (like me) then it does feel claustrophobic but luckily we were only ones there.
Special mention to Clooney (hope got his name right) for pointing out the sights and being really friendly. Gave us the challenge of finding Superman on the rooftops!!
Only gripe is the viewing windows could do with a clean for better views.
Definitely recommend visiting if in the area.

If you are at Las Ramblas then try your best to walk all the way to the end toward the sea and pay homage to Christoper Colombus. The Columbus monument was beautiful constructed with Columbus pointing at the sea. His journey finding Americas was depicted in difference scenes at the base. You could even go up to the top of the monument to have a a bird eye view of the coast (I didn't go up as there's a queue there that day and it was moving really slow). Continue to walk toward the sea and take in the beautiful & peaceful scene. This is a good place to watch sunset too.

This statue of Columbus is located at the bottom of Las Ramblas at a very busy intersection. Can't miss it if you are walking around town. Not easy to take good pictures since the statue is very tall.

The statue of Columbus symbolically completes the Rambla walk. However, I always do this after 9 PM, so I never visited the observation deck inside the column. Why does Columbus stand in Barcelona? Because his two remaining caravels, Pinta and Niña, returned to Spain in Barcelona, landing in Lisbon on the way. The monument itself was opened in 1888 in honor of the upcoming 400th anniversary of the discovery of America. Spain, which had already lost almost all the colonies in Latin America except Cuba, invited king Umberto I of Italy (the birthplace of Columbus) and President Cleveland of the United States to the celebration. 10 years after the short-lived war, the United States will take Cuba from Spain. The 7-meter-high Columbus by sculptor Raphael Atche points to the sea with the index finger of his right hand. However, the finger points not to America (it is behind), not to his native Genoa (it is on the left), but to Majorca. The message can be understood as follows: take the nearest ferry and after Barcelona to the Balearic Islands. What about Costa Brava and Costa Dorada, Columbus, eh?

The tower is located in a nice part of the city, near the marina and one end of La Rambla. There are lots of restaurants and a shopping mall if you walk along the pier.. We went to the top of tower (there is a fast but small lift - have to wait in busy times) and there is good view of the city from there (but you get a better view from the Montjuic castle grounds) Not worth the money and time we spent, in my opinion.

The Columbus monument stands at the end of La Rambla, close to beautiful Customs edifice and before the Rambla del Mar shore promenade.
It's a highly visited area and you cannot miss this 60 m high obelisk with great explorer on top pointing his hand in a strange direction (America is not in that direction, but some 90' westwards - see my pic with 7 PM sun on the west and his finger pointing somewhere south).
The obelisk is really nice, richly decorated and there's a possibility to climb it but only during pretty strange working hours (only until 3 PM if I remember correctly). However, even if it was open I wouldn't go up, as Barcelona has several much better Miradors for free - Tibidabo and Montjuic being the best ones.

We went to the top of the column and it was the best decision we made. The view was just stunning and the staff was telling us stories about the city and the statue. We had a wonderful time on top of Barcelona! It was EUR 12/person.
The first elevator was built in this column in Barcelona!

Delighted that it was open and whisking to the top. From where we had fine vistas across the city. From Montjuic and its Castle to Sagrada Familia, and beyond.
It’s an impressive monument, made for the 1888 Exposition. On the pedestal are four Winged Victories, just a segment of the many symbolic aspects it holds.
Interesting to learn of recent moves to remove the apex statue, in light of revaluating historical events. But Christopher remains pointing atop, but not towards the New World.

The guidebook said that the tower was open until 8:00 p.m., but when I actually went there, it was open until 2:30 p.m., so I couldn't go up.
I regret that I should have checked the booklet I got with the Barcelona Travel Card.
In addition to Columbus on top of the tower, there are several statues at the bottom, and there are also magnificent lion statues on all four sides, so it's worth seeing.

Arrived at 11am on a Sunday. A lot of building work around the base of the Column at the minute which made finding the entrance difficult. No queue at all, straight up to the top in the tiny elevator and had the top viewing area all to ourselves. Fantastic 360 views of the city, the port, and Mont Juic. Well worth a visit.

Ciao, vale la pena salire? Su internet ho visto che il biglietto costa 5,10 €. Sono un pò indecisa. Non sono tanti 5 euro però vorrei sapere se ne vale la pena o se saranno soldi buttati. Grazie :)
