Neighborhood: Gracia
Gracia literally stands out from the pack. It used to be an independent town until late into the 19th century. Though it’s just a short commute away from the center, a visit here feels like you’re in a whole different city. The bohemian vibe has drawn many international artists to this area, resulting in a wide selection of galleries, live music and artsy boutique stores. The nightlife is centered around the vibrant Gracia’s plaças, where young and old gather to enjoy a drink outside. Carrer de Verdi, its main street, offers affordable restaurants and a movie theater that screens new as well as classic films in their original language. However Gracia's greatest treasure lies just up the hill at Guell Park, where Antoni Gaudi's vibrant and revolutionary art sculptures stand atop unequaled views of Barcelona.

This place is hard to find as it is tucked away in an apartment building, but if you can get to it you will not be disappointed. Walking in to an older, large apartment, you will probably immediately start to hear live jazz music. There is a small room for the stage and another room with the old-fashioned 1920's American-esque bar. They also have a back room with a pool table that I imagine is hard to get a game on. A definite must attend for the 20 something year old who is not just about clubbing.

Last night I found this secluded place, and it was a pleasant surprise for a fan of Sherlock Holmes. It was rather late when me and my friend were invited to this pub, which I had never seen or heard of before, even though I actually live in the same building. The lovely Plaça Reial in the heart of Barcelona has a lot of good bars and pubs, but I found this one to be particularly interesting. It's a renovated apartment, with old timey decor and jazz music playing. Even though I was there on a Saturday night and it was a little over-crowded, I enjoyed the atmosphere and would highly recommend this place as one of the hidden gems of Barcelona.

Its a bar basically in someone's apartment. Thats what it feels like. It feels wrong (as you walk up dimly lit apartment stairs), it feels illegal (as you open the door), it feels unwelcoming (when a man stops you before entering the main room saying "for dancers - like real tango dancers, only"), and yet, you feel so lucky to be there, almost proud for getting a drink at the bar. And it feels so real, not gimick-y like most New York speak-easy bars. I was so sure we had the wrong address, but a little courage & curiosity will let you experience this hidden gem, with laid back attitudes from both patron and staff.

Its 11pm, so you ring the buzzer. Nobody answers you just hear the door pop open.

You open it and see an old dark building and a stairway. You walk up the dark stairway, until you see an old apartment door that says the Pipa club in small lettering.

Opening the door, you listen to old 40s music. It is still dark and spooky. You see a pipe lighted on an old frame and then see the old fashioned bar, tablea and rooms of the converted apartment.

You have just stepped into the twilight zone.

The bartender looks like a pretty young lady from the prohibition era. And she smiles and asks what you would like.

The apartment bega for a mystery to be solved. And as you roam the rooms, with your cava glass... You can see how easy it would be to live in that bygone era.

You hear a buzz, and an old bulb lights up showing that another guest is arriving.

More women than men frequent this place. And the chatting is lively. There is also Sherlock Holmes memorabilia and a pipe decorated by Dali.

A fun hidden bar with speak-easy theme. Different from your typical places in Barcelona and definitely worth a visit! Drinks are delicious and staff is friendly. Plus free popcorn who can say no?

I went to the Pipa Club several times while staying in Barcelona on study exchange. It is a bit hidden away; you have to find the right button by the right door in the right corner of Placa Reial, but it isn't too difficult. Once you're in you have to go up a couple of staircases and then you're there. Sometimes they ask you for a club card and sometimes they don't, but if you don't have one and they want one, it's simply a matter of giving them some form of ID and they'll make you one - it's kind of a nice touch and I think part of their marketing that they actually do operate as a club of sorts.

The drinks can be quite expensive but sometimes good value for money. Liquor alone usually costs 5euros but they're generous with it, mixed drinks seem to be 7euros and up, but pretty much what you'd expect. Not sure about beers.

You can think of the drink money as paying for the music though, as most if not all nights they have live jazz, usually starting around 10-10:30. I found that it's best to go on Sunday to catch the "jam" session. It's a lot more relaxed and fun (I'm not particularly into Jazz as a genre but I enjoyed coming just to watch them play and be a bit silly while doing so - one week they even got the audience singing a sort of long hum). There's one guy who's there every week and other people sort of rotate through, I suppose depending on which musicians feel like turning up.

Don't expect it to be somehow quiet. It's hidden away but a lot of people know about and if there's music on, it will get full. Be early for a good seat. They also have smoking nights if you're into that; I gather you need a pipe though.

An amazing place to go for a jazz gig on a Sunday night. Be there early to get a seat and do not hesitate to pay the steep price for the beer! I mean, you have a 2h-ish gig for free with some skilled artists.

Cocktails are good... but very expensive.
The bouncers are very rude and racist. They are not nice at all. Drinks are okay...but you have to wait like 35 minutes to get a drink...bartenders are nice guys but looks like you need to have lots of money to be treated well. I would never going back to this place after our bad experience. Sorry for some of the nice staff!

Good luck.

Sadly, this historic place that used to represent the city, has become a moneymaking tourist trap. They charge extortionate amounts on the door while denying they have an entrance charge, the service is lousy -we had to wait for an hour for our drinks- and we were treated disrespectfully. Don't bother with this place - you can have more fun with more style almost anywhere else in town!

Brought people to Barcelona to go to the club only to arrive to find a sign on the door saying it is closed till 1st September. Shame the Google and trip advisor listings weren't updated.
