Top ways to experience MACBA Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona
The area
Address
Neighborhood: El Raval
Once a downtrodden corner of downtown Barcelona, this gritty area has seen a cultural resurgence boasting an excellent nightlife and one of the most multi ethnic spots in the entire city. A sense of humble authenticity protrudes from the many independent record stores, second hand shops, and student bars that seem to light up the streets day and night. The rocking epicenter, the MACBA Plaça, is a modern day forum for bohemian youth, abuzz with the sights and sounds of late-night gatherings and talented skateboarders showing off their latest tricks.

Modern building with easy access to upper floors, rich and interesting collection, with information and explanations for all art works. Taki's temporary collection realky spectacular. Someone can use the same ticket several times within a month.

Normally I'm not a huge fan of contemporary art, but this was a great museum. It was nice and cool on a hot day. I went on a Friday and it was not overly crowded. I enjoyed both the featured installation art as well as the more permanent collection, which shows how art developed in Spain (and the world) throughout the 20th Century.
I spent two hours there. There was no line to get in, and with my familia numerosa card entrance was free.

This has got to be one of the most hysterically bad art exhibitions I have ever seen. It is in such a beautiful building but the art inside is noticeably lazy and honestly, pretty bad.
A lot of the “big” exhibits are large empty spaces with a screen or an artwork in the middle while some humming sounds play.
In one of these exhibits was a display of a makeshift radio speaker playing a woman’s voice that would best suited as a torture device rather than an art piece, followed by a wall drawn on what looks like cardboard, on a wall. On the second floor there are some rooms that look like the backstage of a theatre department after an earthquake, and honestly the rest is just as bad; Barely any paintings, barely any photos, and a lot of junk.
The most entertainment part of this visit was the skateboarders not trying to faceplant on the ramps outside.
I would also advise that anyone (who for some reason) wants to come here, not linger too long on the streets surrounding this area as the pickpockets here have already pickpocketed my mom when we were leaving.
If someone distracts you (asks for money, offers to clean a stain on you) be aware of your surroundings, pickpockets work in teams.

I enjoy modern art to a degree. But there was little of interest when we visited on 14 September. Poor or non-existent signage meant we missed quite a bit. Apparently one has to go through tightly closed curtains in order to see the displays. Laura Lima's work was extraordinary, but it seems we missed the moving objects' main dance, and it certainly wasn't interactive. The music was monotonous and eerie. If you prefer more conventional art this isn't recommended. The words "Money for old rope" come to mind! And I wasn't on a tour.

Despite the light and brightness of the building, a visit here is a singularly unhappy experience. The ticketing procedure is incomprehensible (when I got to the front of the line the agent told me to email to her the email that the museum had sent to me...WTF?), the staff is unhelpful, the elevator didn't work, the art was hardly worth spending time on, and the building itself is sterile and claustrophobic. All in all a grim afternoon's excursion, a complete waste of time.

We went to visit the museum with an invitation from the Social Media Manager.
The museum has some very cool contemporary art structures, well exposed and from different artists. We were seated inside for a while enjoying the art but also the skateboarders showing their tricks outside. Don't miss, just outside the door, a very nice "aids support" mural by Keith Haring.

A well curated collection showing local artist views through different key point in history (from WWW to now). It is interesting to see how artists express their feelings about common topics like love, war, pain, life.. in a very different ways from normal people like me (with no artistic tendency :D). On the day i visited, the museum had some art event for kids on the first floor, lucky me to have a chance to see all the budding artists express themselves through drawing. Overall, a relaxing and self exploration stroll in a well designed modern building. Recommend if you have time and want to try something different.

Just like an unsatisfactory meal. It looks promising but does not deliver. The interior is very grand and white, and more white. Vast spaces of wall....blank! Maybe a third of the building is actually galleries, so why the huge building ? An architects vanity project ? But someone must have approved the design.
The 'artwork' generally was less than mediocre, same hackneyed themes and not engaging at all, despite very pretentious written explanations of what the artist was trying to convey. No wonder the place was virtually empty.
I have been to galleries all over the world and expected 'world class' this is far from it. A huge 'white elephant' . Do not visit if you are on a tight time schedule , but go if you can generally wrestle out enjoyment from conceptual waffle.

I came here with my boyfriend, I like contemporary art and so was really looking forward to it but I was disappointed, for the 10 euros I paid to get in I don’t think I got much out of it, the info on the pieces wasn’t great and there was one exhibition that had no English translation so we didn’t know what the pieces were about, also compared to the other contemporary art galleries I’ve been to there wasn’t that much actual art, a lot of empty space. There were bits I liked but probably wouldn’t go here again

I was not sure I wanted to go to one more museum. A couple is generally enough for me but I am certainly glad that I made the decision to go to MACBA. The exhibits were amazing and informative. I will not forget the photographs from "100 Years" by Hans-Peter Feldmann any time soon, if ever. Also, videos of an interview with a Colombian hit man will also have a lasting impact. The definition of "Contemporary Art" is not exactly what I expected.
