The area
Address
Neighborhood: El Raval
Once a downtrodden corner of downtown Barcelona, this gritty area has seen a cultural resurgence boasting an excellent nightlife and one of the most multi ethnic spots in the entire city. A sense of humble authenticity protrudes from the many independent record stores, second hand shops, and student bars that seem to light up the streets day and night. The rocking epicenter, the MACBA Plaça, is a modern day forum for bohemian youth, abuzz with the sights and sounds of late-night gatherings and talented skateboarders showing off their latest tricks.

The museum is very nice and it is on a very nice plaza where you can see the reflection of Barcelona all the way to the sea from the glass on the top of the building.
We were here for the American Dream exhibit and found it very interesting. Didn't have time to visit other parts of the museum during that visit but have been there in the past and it had some interesting contemporary art.

In an extraordinary building, sleek and modern, interesting exhibitions were underway.
Works by Bouchra Khalili a Moroccan born artist comprise aspects of anti-colonial resistance and solidarity.
Pieces by two Columbian artists are here. MarĂa Teresa HincapiĂ© has a major display of oeuvre. In Silence but Together is a large composition by Maria Jose Arjona.
Elena del Rivero's Letters to the Mother is an absorbing and striking creation.

The building is spectacular, full of light and very airy. The art on show won’t be to everyone’s taste but it was exactly right for me and I found both of the shows that were on to be very interesting. The second floor had nothing on at the time I visited, which was a shame because I would have loved to spend more time looking around. I would definitely return in the future.

From a contemporary art museum you expect everything: installations, sculpture, painting,... creativity would truly have no boundaries and the artists who could exhibit here, in the world, would be many.
Instead, the square in front is already a mess of decorum: a gym for those who use skateboards, for those who want to chat, but everyone is sitting on the floor in an indecorous way, making you wonder where you ended up.
Inside the huge spaces have ridiculous and insignificant works. Perhaps the director should change the policy of artistic proposals. Don't go, not even if you have the Barcellona Card, which would save you €12, but you would be wasting time unnecessarily.

Beautiful building but the “art” was a disgrace! I realize that art is personal and I am used to a lot of modern art, but what was exhibited here is an insult to the concept of art.
A tilted desk table and cupboard. Rags that were hung up and a high woke level in terms of climate etc.
Not recommended and I would like to warn people before wasting their money on this “museum”.

This has got to be one of the most hysterically bad art exhibitions I have ever seen. It is in such a beautiful building but the art inside is noticeably lazy and honestly, pretty bad.
A lot of the “big” exhibits are large empty spaces with a screen or an artwork in the middle while some humming sounds play.
In one of these exhibits was a display of a makeshift radio speaker playing a woman’s voice that would best suited as a torture device rather than an art piece, followed by a wall drawn on what looks like cardboard, on a wall. On the second floor there are some rooms that look like the backstage of a theatre department after an earthquake, and honestly the rest is just as bad; Barely any paintings, barely any photos, and a lot of junk.
The most entertainment part of this visit was the skateboarders not trying to faceplant on the ramps outside.
I would also advise that anyone (who for some reason) wants to come here, not linger too long on the streets surrounding this area as the pickpockets here have already pickpocketed my mom when we were leaving.
If someone distracts you (asks for money, offers to clean a stain on you) be aware of your surroundings, pickpockets work in teams.

A pretty empty museum. We know that modern art can be controversial but if you visit the Moma or the Guggenheim in Bilbao or NY you may find works worthwhile. This is not the case with this museum. The quality of the works is terrible. One expects much more from a world resort like Barcelona.
The aesthetics of museum workers are powerfully striking...

Thought I'd pop in with my Articket to check it out. All temporary exhibits. Not captivating. Some truly vulgar. One exhibit stands out as great contemporary art: female mannequins dressed in traditional Muslim dress looking at a blank chalkboard.

I had bought tickets via art pass and was very curious about what I would see in such a museum.
The building is very nice and you get a relaxed feeling when you enter. The staff were very nice and chatty with us about details regarding exhibitions.
Collections come mainly from Catalan and Spanish artists, and are from the mid-20th century onwards.

I enjoy modern art to a degree. But there was little of interest when we visited on 14 September. Poor or non-existent signage meant we missed quite a bit. Apparently one has to go through tightly closed curtains in order to see the displays. Laura Lima's work was extraordinary, but it seems we missed the moving objects' main dance, and it certainly wasn't interactive. The music was monotonous and eerie. If you prefer more conventional art this isn't recommended. The words "Money for old rope" come to mind! And I wasn't on a tour.
