Neighborhood: El Born / La Ribera
The labyrinth that is El Born becomes most apparent the moment you turn down one of its side streets. But this is one of the few labyrinths you might actually enjoy losing your way in. After all, there are few places that live and breathe such exciting energy regardless of the time of day. This neighborhood seamlessly transcends the old and new parts of the city, reflected in its vast array of restaurants ranging from fancy Michelin-star establishments to trendy fusion restaurants. Here you'll find historical and cultural attractions such as the popular Picasso Museum and the Gothic cathedral La Santa Maria del Mar, where you just might be able to catch a traditional Catalan wedding.

Nuts roasted over fire makes the store smell fantastic. Purchased chocolate covered almonds and macadamian nuts for ourselves and frinds and family back home. Went back several times for more chocolate covered oranges

Nice bit of history and delicious nuts. They still roast on property and there is so much history. Nice selection of items to take home. Even bought some gifts here. Staff were very friendly. A little hidden gem.

Finding our way to those tapas mentioned on the guidebooks, we stopped by at at Casa Gispert (E&A Gispert) - a hidden treasure not too distinguishable by our source of info.
They have been selling good quality local produce for 160 years. And they are not over-marketing their legacy, probally too under-marketing it, actually. We selected nuts, dates and cookies on the go and till we reached San Sebastian, we did not find anything eqaully tasty.
Trusting their recommendation, we also chose a tapas over those mentioned in the guidebook instead. It also ended up as a very good memory of ours.

This is the type of business one wishes could be declared a UNECO World Heritage Site in order to protect it from the crushing banality of finding all the same stores around the world these days. Here is a unique institution still in family hands and proud of its Catalan roots. Entering it is like passing through a time warp into another age. The smells are fascinating, a lovely mixture of roasting coffee, nuts, and spices. Just take your time and look around at everything and drink in the atmosphere. Then spend your money, for we have a responsibility to support these venerable survivors. A large quantity of saffron will cost you a fraction of its price back in the US, for example. There is a very strong local clientele so you can be sure the turnover is high for the products on offer. There is wonderful olive oil, although you may think twice before hauling it back. I return here on every visit to Barcelona and continue to marvel at its existence.

After a little searching, we finally found this wonderful shop. It is immediately west of the church of Santa Maria del Mar in the El Born/La Ribera neighborhood. The staff was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, providing great suggestions about local/nontouristy nearby sights to visit. They also have a great selection of reasonably-priced spices, saffron, dried fruits, chocolate, nuts. Definitely try to stop by if you are in the neighborhood!

This is a fun nut roastery in the center of the Gothic Quarter. The floor plaque at the entrance of the store marks this store as a store that has gained national recognition for excellence and history. There are 2 dates on the plaque. The older date is the date when the shop was established and the newer date is the date when the plaque was installed. Be sure to grab a cup of horchata. It's made from rare nuts that only grow in Spain. Unlike the rice milk drink of Mexico and Central America.

I discovered this shop by total accident looking for a cash machine in the Born district of Barcelona. What a fantastic find. Tins of Spanish olive oil, truffles, beautifully aromatic bouquet garni - which we can't wait to try, jams, fresh coffee beans - it was like stepping back 100 years.
The staff have great personalities and speak English well. They are pro Catalonian and quite rightly so - when I asked if the truffles were Spanish, I was told - no, they are the finest Catalonian truffles you will ever find!
A great store, well worth a vist even if you just browse, but I'm sure you won't just do that - oh and very reasonably priced. The truffle was 4 Euro.

I was there with my friend last week. We just walked there without knowing where we were. The shop, however caught my friend’s eyes so we stopped by.
It was the most wondering thing in my whole trip to Barcelona to walk into the shop I have to admit!!
I’m not a big fan of seeds, nuts. BUT, I ended up buying a box of Carquinylis and a jar of nuts. Even though I came on a budget airline and really had no space for any more food in my luggage, I felt I would regret it if not buy any.
Now I’m sitting in front of my computer, having a sip of hot black tea and with the caramel flavored nuts at hand. It’s heaven. Guys, go buy a jar of nuts - it’s soooo good and so worth it.
As a Taiwanese tourist I also enjoyed my little chat with one of the staff in the shop (wink!).

If you’re looking for some great gourmet food, give this place a try. The have a huge assortment of roasted nuts, dried fruits, saffron, and olive oils. Every kind of dried fruit is available; they are much softer, fresher, and better tasting than anywhere else.
The real draw here is they’ve been in operation for 150 years, and still use the same oven to roast the nuts. If you have a chance, go to the back of the store and check out the oven. It still works and is worth a look.
The dried fruit is out of this world. The dried peaches are probably the softest, most natural tasting dried fruit I’ve ever had. The nuts are delicious too, with many varieties to choose.
Their saffron, while not the cheapest, is very high quality and from the best sources in Spain. This place is a gem and has a landmark plaque embedded in the street to signify it’s been in business for many, many years.
