The area

Neighborhood: Barrio Gòtico (Barri Gòtic)
With its iconic, old-Europe streets and alleys, this picturesque neighborhood is the very heart of Barcelona. It blends historic artifacts from its days under Roman dominion up through the Spanish Civil War with a vibrant modern-day culture of artisan shops and authentic culinary experiences. Avid explorers will be thrilled to discover quaint terraces and plazas brought to life by the many small bars and local musicians lasting late into the night. Fashionistas will be drawn to Portal de L’Angel, which is lined with well-known brand names and smaller boutique stands.

Plaça de Sant Josep Oriol is a small public square in the Gothic Quarter. The square is busy with cafes, restaurants and entertainers. Much like the adjacent Plaça del Pi, you’ll likely be passing this square on the way to Basílica de Santa Maria del Pi. It’s just like any public square and there’s nothing special about it, there’s no real reason to specifically visit it.

Adjacent to the basilica of Santa Maria del Pi is the gorgeous placa de Sant Josep Oriol. This lovely, irregularly shaped square is lined with pubs, restaurants and cafes that attract tourists as well as street performers of all sorts. Every place on the plaza has a great view of the basilica and there is ample shade provided by trees. Adding to the scenery are picturesque side streets jetting in all directions away from the plaza. A historic Bar del Pi is also located in this tiny gem of a square. Highly recommended.

This place was exactly as shown and our host DELPHINE was FANTASTIC. Friendly, helpful and even provided a bottle of champagne. The room was very spacious, clean and overlooked the Placa with an old church and surrounding shops for scenery. We dined at the Tapas bar next door and the food n drink were tasty and inexpensive. This was a 3-4 minute walk to Las Rambla. Great location. Ver reasonably priced. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

This small square next to Plaza del Pi is known for the weekend art market on Saturdays.

On other days, you can visit the art boutiques and shops. Also, the church of Santa Maria del Pi is located next to the square.

We had cause to pass through this small square in central Barcelona several time during our most recent stay in the city. On each occasion, the square was dirty and un-kept. There was litter everywhere.
It was also occupied by a number of individuals who appeared to be somewhat menacing in their demeanour. It was not feel like a pleasant nor safe place for us to be. Hence, we passed through as quickly as we could.
Not really a great deal to see here other than the basilica of Santa Maria del Pi.

One of the many small parks you will find in the Gothic quarter. This one contained one interesting statue, and not much green space.

Nothing that special about this small square in the Gothic Quarter other than some restaurants and musicians in the evening. No greenery here nor even a photo op.

We happened upon this square by chance. Unfortunately nothing much was going on during our visit. There are a few cafes and restaurants in the general area and you can have a drink or a meal in relative peace and quiet. Apparently lots of buskers and artists frequent this area and it becomes quite lively at certain times. The church Església de Santa Maria del Pi, is quite beautiful and is worth visiting too.

I happened upon this plaza by accident but what a happy one! Saturday evening wandering around I found this Gothic Cathedral, The sanctuary was open so I went inside and admired the incredible statues of the Saints. Carved, gilded, some with fabric clothing, fascinating. What really captured me were the giant papier mache figures of historical figures. I heard music and went outside to find a little parade happening with two of these figures dancing around! It was a Sant Josef Oriol festival! They proceeded to come inside and move the figures from their alcoves into the church.
The next day I had to go back and there certainly was a festival happening, there must have been 20 or these giant costumes, musicians, acrobats...amazing!
I visited the local art market in this same square and bought a lovely painting from an artist named Lola Albellan.
