Centre Picasso d'Horta de Sant Joan is a museum about the well known painter Picasso and it is located in the little town called Horta de Sant Joan, where Picasso was living in a friend's house about 1 year. Really, I did not expect to see a museum about this painter here and it was very interesting. You can see a lot of paintings, not originals, of Picasso and learn about his life in the town. Very interesting for art-lovers.

I visited this museum with my family. It is not very big but worth a visit if in Horta de San Joan. Some interesting facts about Picasso and pictures as well.

For the first time in my life I understood what the paintings of Picasso were actually all about. The museum provides a really good insight into the development of several of the works of Picasso, with numerous sketches showing the development of his ideas.

If this museum proves one thing it's that imagination and commitment are more important than having access to lots of money. The art on display here isn't original, but I found exploring here a more enjoyable experience than visiting the galleries in Barcelona and Malaga where the genuine article is displayed. What you get here is a real narrative arc, and a painstaking effort to provide context regarding the two visits to the region the young Picasso made to visit an artistic compare - and access to a very full loaned guide which has been impeccably translated. With maps and time lines I left here with a much clearer picture of how Cubism developed than I've had from any other museum - and it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience - not just because it was a bargain. Bravo!

We finished here as part of our guided tour. We were given English booklets with translated everything which was nice to find out about Picasso and some of the things that he had used / sketches from his childhood. My only complaint is there was so much to read by the end I found myself just looking at his artwork.

Even though the village of Horta de St Joan doesn't have the resources to put up real Picasso paintings, they have done an excellent job with their prints of Picasso's work. He spent two separate periods of time in their village with his good friend and fellow artist Pallares (whose work is more traditional). Whenever we have visitors come to our holiday home in L'Ampolla who have an interest in art, we've taken them to Horta and I've never tired of looking around their museum, or village. It is a beautiful spot at the top of a hill and well worth going to if you are in the area.
