This free museum is contained in 3 separate rooms scattered through out an old religious building. Do NOT think you've seen everything if you haven't been upstairs! That is where the best rooms are! A wonderful collection of artifacts from African displayed in well lit modern cases or dioramas. If you're tired of seeing Spanish art, but love art, head over to this great collection.

Like other reviewers I thought this a really worthwhile museum to visit.

Information in English is limited to brief object labels. The longer explanatory texts were in Spanish only. That meant that I did not understand what I was looking at.

But I did get a sense of wonder at the strangeness of the objects and an appreciation of the skill and imagination with which they had been made.

It is rewarding for us to read how the museum inspired you in some way and get your senses. Sorry for the inconvenience about the explanatory texts. We have a guide at the beggining of each room -in English and French-, but we will work to make them more visible. Thank you for your feedback, Michael :)

The Santa Cruz Palace contains a good collection of african art collected by the Jimenez-Arellano family, distributed in three rooms over two floors. During our visit the Opening times were 11-14 and 16:30-19:30 Monday-Saturday. It is highly recommended and free. Remember also to take a look to the library in the first floor.

The Fundacion Alberto Jimenez-Arellano Alonso is located in the beautiful Palacio Santa Cruz, which was constructed in the 15th century by the very powerful Cardinal Mendoza. Its cloister is beautiful. The museum has beautiful African art and is probably the best museum of its kind in Spain.

Strolling through the lovely historical streets of this ancient city I beheld a Palace with open doors. Curosity got the better of me and I first looked at the ground floor than went up to the select exhibits on the first floor which amazed me for their uniqueness. The staff were also very courteous.

A surprise find. Part of the University of Valladolid. Tucked away. But quite quite stunning. Better, far better than many "ethnographic" museums in major European cities.
Fantastic.
Why is it not more well known?

I gave my impressions of this foundation at the same time as two other exhibition venues of the University in the section concerning the university.
I just recall that the exhibition on the OKU Kingdom located in Cameroon is exceptional because the donations were expressly made by the sovereign to representatives of the University and that no major ethnological museum holds such rare and beautiful works from this kingdom.
