A charming square. Plaza Mayor in Segovia was originally called Plaza de San Miguel because it was located in the Church of San Miguel, next to which Isabel la Catolica was proclaimed Queen of Castile. Later it was called Plaza de la Constitucion. It is now surrounded by numerous restaurants with terraces, where you can taste the traditional cuisine of Segovia. This square is home to the City Hall, Juan Bravo Theater, San Miguel Church, and the Cathedral. It has a wrought-iron and wood templete de musica in the middle of the square, which hosts musical events throughout the year. From here you have most of the city's sights within a stone's throw and it's a good starting point. And a great place to rest.

The plaza is surrounded on all sides by building with covered corridors, and some with arches that give way to streets beyond. It was pleasant to be in the middle of the square, and appreciate it's beauty. We had lunch at one of the many restaurants around. I hope to return here some day.

Tip: Careful with possible pickpockets.

The main or best known public square in Segovia is much like the Plaza Mayor of major cities in Spain. Arranged around the square are lots of bars, cafes and restaurants. The Cathedral of Segovia is also here and the only slightly unusual thing about this plaza is that it has an old style bandstand.

Worth a stop for food.

The Plaza Mayor is the main square, (hence the name), of old Segovia.

Follow the Calle Real which is the main thoroughfare which joins the Plaza del Azoguejo to the Plaza Mayor.

You will find interesting monuments, buildings, arcades, the gothic style- Cathedral of Segovia, restaurants and café’s within the open central pavilion.

If you haven’t picked up your maps before arriving here, the Tourist Centre is also located here.

Plaza mayor of Segovia is nothing else than a beautiful square of restaurants and gift shops all around. You will certainly pass through when walking on the streets as it is located right in front of the cathedral.

We stopped here after our visit to the cathedral for a beer and to rest our feet. It was great fun watching all the tooing and froing, and lots of parties were settling down to some lunch at the various cafes.

After marveling at the Roman aqueduct, take a rest for lunch in the lively Plaza Mayor before visiting the beautiful Cathedral and then on to the Alcázar.
