This is a wonderful hidden gem, a little out of the City centre on the other side of the Aquaduct. I was lucky to be passing just as the caretaker, Rafael was opening up this lovely 12th century church. He told me so much about the interior, but only speaks Spanish so if you don't it would be really good to have someone with you who does to translate. The frescoes in the apse were only uncovered by a 1960s restoration project and they are simply amazing. The subjects are the most common in Romanesque churches: Pantocrator in mandorla with the Tetramorphs, biblical scenes and scenes of the Crucifixion, the Descent of Jesus, the Last Supper and the Capture of Jesus. There is also an oriental inspiration with the representation of elephants, birds, arabesques, and other images. In a side chapel next to the altar, there is an 11th century effigy of Santo Cristo de los Gascones in a glass casket. There is also the most exquisitely carved archway to the left of the apse inside the church over an iron gate. This was truly magical experience. Seek out this wonderful church if you are in Segovia, you're in for a treat if it's open.

The paintings on the walls are just beautiful. Of all the churches we visited, this was probably my favorite because it is so quaint. We also met the caretaker, Rafael, who told us the story behind each of the paintings on the wall. He is mentioned in a travel book and I told him he is famoso!. Since it is so close to the Aqueduct, it is very easy to stop by and see if the door is opened. If you don't understand spanish, be sure you have someone who does so you can understand everything Rafael shares. It is amazing!

This simple, yet beautiful church was my favorite place in Segovia. The man who showed us around spoke no English, but it was clear how proud he was of his church. Make note of its hours as it closes for a few hours in the afternoon & then reopens at 4:00 pm. Wonderful!
