We visited Segovia on a day trip from Madrid. While we had time to take in the most prominent of the city's attractions, it would have been awesome to be able to spend some real time soaking in the medieval glory of the city. Just walking the hilly streets, one cannot help but to become enraptured by the history. Even if you don't particularly care about dates and fact, the beauty of the old city is amazing.

Getting there from Madrid is very easy, 30 minutes by train, more or less €20, and when you get to the station, you take 1 bus for about €3 each way until you reach the aqueduct, which is a world heritage site. It is an impressive Roman architectural work, a peculiar fact that inside From a column in a niche is the Virgin.
The city is paved, you have to walk a lot to see everything, the Santa María Cathedral, the Alcazar of Segovia and others.
The typical food is roast suckling pig.

We have stayed for two weeks in an Airbnb in Segovia and have loved every minute. Even with the quarantine, we see bits and parts of the City as we head to the grocery and to the market. Every corner of the old city is amazing. We will be back after this crazy time.

My family and I visited Segovia last week and it was worth the day trip from Madrid. The Medevil town was well preserved, clean, and we spent a few hours just walking up and down their streets and sightseeing. I recommend getting a map at the visitor's center once you arrive (right next to the Aqueducts). This was very helpful in making sure we got to see different interesting landmarks. We spent about 4.5 hours walking around and had a quick lunch. Our main points to visit were the Aqueducts, Cathederal, and the Alcazar which were all easily within walking distance of each other. There are other many points to see in between these sights as well. We arrived early to ensure we had good parking-- which I'm very glad we did.

If you're tired with capital's hustle do rent a car (it's pretty cheap) and head to Segovia, only around an hour drive.
It's a beautiful small town, very compact, picturesque and easy to navigate on foot.
Two outstanding attractions are the 1st cent Aqueduct and the fairy tale like Alcazar.
Tons of restaurants to try local specialty of Conichillo (small young pig, less than a month old) and Segovia Ponche amazing dessert.

City to enjoy at least in a couple of days, to not only appreciate the monuments that can be seen from the outside such as the aqueduct, the walls, the house of the peaks and its streets, but also the multitude of palaces, churches and above all the Cathedral with the climb to the tower and the Alcázar with the climb to the keep. Outside, the Church of La Vera Cruz, the sanctuary of La Fuencisla or the convent where San Juan de la Cruz rests.
It is best to stay there, in the interior, or at the Parador with global views of the city. Just as you cannot miss eating the beans, suckling pigs or the Segovian punch. Everything is delicious.

The city was founded by the Romans in the 1st century BC.
Already in Roman times, Segovia was surrounded by fortifications. Fragments of the walls have been preserved to this day. An interesting idea to visit the Old Town of Segovia is to start a walk at the aqueduct and head towards the Alcazar. Along the way, Segovia offers, of course, many places worth stopping for a bit longer, many noteworthy sights: the Jewish Quarter, numerous churches and monasteries, gardens, museums and delicious restaurants. Within the old town of Segovia, there are numerous squares, some of which are definitely worth visiting. The most interesting are Plaza Mayor with the cathedral built next to it, Plaza de San Martn with the church of the same name or Plaza del Azoguejo, the former Arab market with an aqueduct. As is usually the case in such old towns, you should leave the main street and wander around the less frequented corners. A walk through the labyrinth of narrow streets of old Segovia allows you to remember its magic for a long time. The Old Town is full of valuable monuments from the period of Moorish rule and the 16th and 17th centuries, thanks to which it was entered on the UNESCO list.

The old city is compact and easily walkable. We found it terribly crowded with tourists on an October Wednesday afternoon, and kept dodging tour groups to try to see the things we wanted. But definitely worth a visit.

Starting from its famous aqueduct, climbing through the picturesque streets bordered by quaint shops selling all sorts of wares and souvenirs. Reaching the ancient Cathedral at the top and still yet more to be seen.
I wish I had more than the half a day we spent here. I recommend you plan at least a full day.

Segovia is often underestimated - especially among us Germans. When you think of Castilla, Madrid, Toledo and Salamanca are in the foreground.
Segovia is wrongly forgotten. The aqueduct, Alcazar and the cathedral are definitely worth a detailed visit. Especially the Alcaza as a World Heritage Site. The very friendly downtown with the Placa Mayor marketplace has a pleasant Spanish flair.
Segovia is not far from Madrid.

Hello, we are first timer in Spain.Planning a visit in March. Due to rushed itinerary, we are planning to start from Madrid by 2 PM and reach back by 9-10 PM. 1. Is half day + evening fine to visit main attraction points in Segovia 2. We would like to go up the castle top. 3. Which view is better from castle top- day or evening? 4. Does the train tickets from Madrid be booked in advance? or can I buy on-the-spot train tickets? Do they get expensive if I buy on the spot?
Really Appreciate your quick help. thanks much

hi,, half day plus evening is a bit tight.. though you can still make it. There is alternative way to travel is take the bus. If you stay in the center, it is about the same time to go by train (as train station is a bit far from the center). Do check the schedule before hand. I was at castle during the day so cant really tell compare to the evening view. Ideally should buy tickets in advance. Price is the same but just to make sure availability.

Other than driving ourselves what would be the best way to travel from Madrid to Segovia?
Written February 15, 2016
Oh for sure take the train! Segovia is almost a suburb of Madrid in that there are folks who live there and work in Madrid. But Segovia is a stunning town that must be seen. There can also be an issue with parking so you really don't need to drive. There is a bus from the train station that drops you right outside the main gate so you can enter and take in the town on your own.
