About
The Museo de Arte Contemporaneo Esteban Vicente houses the extraordinary collection of works donated by Esteban Vicente (Turegano, 1903 - Long Island, 2001), the only Spanish member of the first generation of the New York School of Abstract Expressionism in America. The exhibition of this Permanent Collection alternates with temporary exhibitions and cultural activities such as lectures, recitals and concerts. The museum is located in the medieval palace of King Henry IV, of the Trastamara family, whose construction dates back to 1445. In addition to its five exhibition spaces, the visitor can also enjoy its Renaissance chapel with its Hispano-Moorish carved wooden ceiling, currently the auditorium of the museum, and the garden where Esteban Vicente's ashes repose and the garden where Harriet and Esteban Vicente's ashes repose. The Museo de Arte Contemporaneo Esteban Vicente has become an important point of reference for every visitor to Segovia, a city whose entire historical and cultural legacy has been designated by the UNESCO as a World Historical Heritage Site.

We weren't familiar with this artist, but we found a Spanish artist who finished his career in America...influenced by artists like Pollack.

The art in the museum is not a good representation of contemporary art, or even the modern art of the 1950s (which it is closest to). For that, see the Tapies museum in Barcelona. However, the bathrooms are extremely clean. If that is what you need, it is worth two and a half euro for the toilet and half a euro for a quick look at the interior of the building.

The Vicente museum is a gem in Segovia. The children’s programming as amazing and the exhibits quite wonderful. The museum is sort of hidden, but it is not more than a minute off the main Street. Totally worth the visit. Don’t miss this gem.

Did you ever go to an art museum, look at something on the wall and think, "ah, I can do better than that!" Well then this is the museum for you; this is a museum where I truly believe that most of the museum goers can do a better job at creating art than the guy this museum is named for!
I'm guessing that the guy was born in the city or close by because really, I have no idea why they would make a museum for him. I'm not saying that his stuff is bad; just that anybody can do what he did and most likely better. Picasso did some crazy stuff too but he created brilliant art as well. This guy Vicente, I guess, forgot to do that good stuff. Well if he did, it wasn't in this museum.
I gave the museum two stars because not only was it just a few Euros to get in, but there was an exhibition of Juan Gris paintings, and SIg. Gris is a fine artist.

it's free on thursdays.
It's a nice gallery full of Vicente's works. A room still shows a lovely chapel with beautiful ceiling. Not worth paying an entrance fee though.

A lovely museum dedicated to the art of Esteban Vicente. You need to be a fan of abstract/modern art - otherwise you will not enjoy it. As an amateur artist myself I always ask myself the question - 'Would I like this painting hanging in my house?' - sadly, in this case, I wouldn't. When is art art? - All a matter of taste (and good marketing)! Some of his work does bring a smile to your face, however.

Indebted to Surrealism and Dada, Vicente's little sculptures of "found objects" make you smile, and his colourful paintings are heart-elevating. The medieval building is a fine venue in it itself, and when we were visiting, on a Saturday afternoon, we had the museum more or less for ourselves, so we could wander around at a leisurely pace.

I thought this was a lovely exhibition space in the centre of Segovia. Also attached to the gallery is an old part of the building which is used as a lecture hall and is worth looking at. The gallery is dedicated to the art of Esteban Vicente who was born in Segovia but who spent much of his working life in the USA. I guess if you like modern art you'll enjoy the work here. For me the 'art' looks like something you'd have been quite pleased about if your 3 year old had bought it home from play school!!! I'm afraid I just do not 'get' modern art.

I really enjoyed my visit but I am a fan of modern art. Vicente's work is typical of the 50s and 60s modern abstract period. If you are not sure about seeing this check out the non-permanent exhibition. I saw a wonderful photo exhibit by a well known Spanish photographer. It is inexpensive and a diversion from the old city.

Tucked into Henry IV's 15th-Century palace in Segovia, the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo Esteban Vicente is a little gem of a museum, devoted entirely to the work of Vicente. Haters of abstract art will want to skip it, but those who like the work of abstract expressionists and color field painters should have a great time. Vicente was a Spanish artist who eventually ended up as a part of the New York School. Individual canvases are reminiscent of Mark Rothko, early Philip Guston, Hans Hofmann, and others. Vicente is a joyful master of color, and anyone who loves color will enjoy his paintings.
My partner and I were in Segovia on a Sunday afternoon of a three-day weekend. The city was crowded with people there to visit the Roman aqueduct, the famous alcazar, and the late-Gothic cathedral. But there was literally no one else (except the congenial staff) in the Vicente museum. The visit took only about an hour, but it provided the highlight of our trip to Segovia.
PS The aqueduct is amazing, too.
