Toledo and Segovia Tour with Alcazar Entrance from Madrid

1,016 reviews
Visiting both Toledo and Segovia in a day from Madrid is near impossible without a car rental and some serious time management. On this trip, you get to see both cities as a guide charts their history, minus the stress of organizing transport. Plus, you’re certain of seeing the key sights, including Toledo’s Primada Cathedral, and Segovia’s Roman aqueduct and Alcazar. Ideal if you’re pressed for time and want a day out of Madrid.

For us, we were lucky we had a private guide to highlight some of the churches and sites in Toledo which she loved and you may or may not see if you do everything on your own. This was one of those churches we probably would have missed.

Judging from the small number of reviews, my guess is that visitors entering the old city of Toledo through the Puerta de Bisagra assume the round towers of this church as being part of the gate to which it was originally joined. However, in the late 15th century the church was separated from the gate so you can walk around the church which was not possible until then. The gate towers are blank and the church towers have stone frames for windows although they have been walled up. We were unable to get inside the church but it only takes a few minutes to walk around which is worth the effort.

Originally the temple was attached to the Bisagra Gate and other different buildings. In the twentieth century, there was a significant reconstruction in this area, and as the result of work, Santiago del Arrabal did not join the gate and the surrounding building anymore and stood freely. It has been a lucky change since we could walk around this temple and examine it in every angle. This old Iglesia in the early part of Toledo, probably built on the place of a primitive church or a mosque, that is a widespread thing in Spain. This is a beautiful example of Mudejar style architecture. The combination of the round and rectangular shapes makes the building more exciting and, despite its very powerful appearance, gives it some playfulness. If you go to see the Bisagra Gate, don't forget to visit the neighboring Iglesia Santiago del Arrabal.

There are indeed several churches in Toledo to see, probably the best part of Toledo are churches. Many of them were either former mosque or built on the former sites of mosque. This one's distinguishing feature is being near the Gate and the large Moorish arch that is the front door. When visiting the gate, this is just inside.
