Located at the feet of the Alcazar and a few minutes' walk from the Cathedral, the Zocodover is Toledo's largest plaza, though in the shape of quadrilateral it is not square. In medieval times, it was the animal market, and Zocodover is said to be derived from the Arabic term for "market of beast of burden." The plaza retains little of its former purpose or appearance. It has been expanded and in the buildings around the plaza there are lots of stores and restaurants.

When my wife and I arrived in Toledo, we started our exploration of the city walking from this square in the heart of Toledo. There is not a lot to do within the plaza itself. However it is surrounded by cafes, restaurants, shops and a variety of small businesses. It is a great place to sit and people watch or to enjoy a snack from one of the nearby cafes. It also appeared to be a place where visitors to Toledo can centrally meet for walking tours. After exploring the many winding side avenues of Toledo I never felt lost. Eventually all of the streets will lead visitors back to the central plaza.
