The Puerta del Sol is one of the old city gate and fortifications of Toledo built in the late 14th century by the Knights Hospitaller after the reconquest. Just above the arch of the gate is a medallion above the arch of the gate depicts the ordination of the Saint Ildephonsus.
The gate is truly monumental and gets it's name from the sun and the moon that were once painted on either side of this medallion. Worth seeing if in Toledo.

Puerta Del Sol is one of the city gates of Toledo which was built in the late 14th century and is another majestic entry into the beautiful city of Toledo.
A busy little area with cars going in and out of the gate and even a local bus which seems to just fit through here.
It may not be as popular as the San Marino or Alcantara, but definitely worth a visit.

Love it, beautiful historical site at the entrance of Toledo. Worth the stop for a pic or two. Then go up the stairs to the mezquita de cristo de la cruz

As you stand under the arch, if you look up you'll see a slot in the stone above your head, and the bottom edge of a thick, heavy piece of wood. Notice the businesslike metal spike in it - clearly meant to be brought crashing down on the skulls of enemies.

One of the historically important gates of Toledo, location is great and provides beautiful views.
On its own the gate has architectural significance, but for tourists its mainly a nice spot to take photos.

One of the many ancient gateways of Toledo on the hillside by the main road
There is a medallion above the ornamental arch of the gate which illustrates the ordination of the Visigothic Ildephonsus, Toledo's patron saint.
Pictures of the sun and the moon were once painted on either side of the medallion and from which the gate takes its name.

This is a free attraction. You can view it while walking around Toledo, and especially admire the details of the architecture.

This is one of the gateways into the old city of Toledo. The walls of the city have been extended sideways to accommodate this gateway so that the road runs along the walls and visitors can enter the gate without turning.
The gate was constructed by the Knights Hospitaller in the late middle ages but is built in the Moorish style with the typical horseshoe and pointed horseshoe arches and an interlaced arch design over the entrance.
The gate is built of stone and masonry with the entrance flanked by two towers - a rectangular one on the inside and a semi-circular one on the outside and the entire structure is crenelated. Windows in the towers provide additional lookout points.
The emblem above the gate depicts the ordination of Toledo's patron saint under the Sun and Moon which give the gate its name.
It is an interesting piece of Toledo's history and definitely worth a visit. The arch is very close to the Mezquita del Cristo de la Luz and it is best to combine a visit to both the monuments.

This Moorish influenced guard tower, and still operating iron gate formed the main entry to Toledo. As such, the entry needed to be controlled and that was the role of Puerta del Sol. One can only imagine the streams of visitors over the centuries, and under what circumstances access was denied

What’s the best way to get around in Toledo?

Walking is THE best way to see the sights, the narrow streets and little shops.
Most of the attractions are close enough to walk. If you want to visit the Alcantara bridge and you're on the west part of Toledo like at Puerta del Cambron or the monastery of San Juan, just jump into a taxi as that would be a long walk. There are plenty of taxis buzzing around so it's never more than a few minutes' wait.
However, from the railway station, it's a long walk to the center, so best to get a taxi or a bus. After exiting the station, turn right and there is a bus that leaves every 5-10 mins.
Wear comfortable shoes! :-)
