I'd recommend booking at least 24 hours ahead of time, as we found that tickets were a bit scarce on the morning trains and several had already filled to capacity. It's a short ~10 minute walk from the station to the bridge where you enter Toledo city walls. It's a steep climb up to the main square. A bus is also available which I'd recommend for anyone with any mobility issues. We did not plan our visit carefully but were not disappointed. Everything is within a short walk (though be prepared for LOTS of hills). The walk from the main square to the Cathedral is perhaps 10 minutes. After ~2 hours in the cathedral, we just wandered the streets, visiting a number of churches (and discovering along the way the €12 "bracelet/pulsara" that allowed access to ~ religious sites. We could have easily spent longer. I regret not visiting the El Greco Museum. We finished the day with Sangria at a cafe on the main square and returned to Madrid in the early evening. Madrid is a "modern" city in the sense that little there dates from before the mid 16th century. So it is great to see the older city of Toledo.Visited October 2022Written October 27, 2022

Closer and closer to entering the city, the views sighted were even better and better. Some parts from a bridge are so picturesque, you can take pictures as if you were in a painting! Lovely, quaint old town perfect for the tourist, with lots to see. I was most excited by be in the town where the art of Damascene jewelry from Spain is historical in this place. We visited a demonstration of the art and, of course, I had a hard time choosing something for my collection, but I managed! Enjoyed lovely Toledo!Visited September 2019Written February 3, 2020
- FJGonzalezGBethesda, Maryland1,228 contributionsAncient capital and repository of culturesToledo, Spain's capital city under the Visigoth kings and after the reconquest, is a beautiful walking city. Only by walking, slowly, can you savor the richness of its multilayered history and multiple cultures, roman, gothic, moorish, jewish, and christian. Kings, both christian and muslim, walked down these streets, as well as Doménikos Theotokópoulos , the famous painter El Greco. Built on the site of a 3rd century Roman palace, the Alcazar towers over the city, and was the site of one of the Spanish Civil War's most harrowing battles. Yes, there are innumerable touristy shops and restaurants, but they cannot hide the rich authenticity of the city.Visited February 2020Written April 25, 2020

I could see there was beauty in the place but it was shockingly overcrowded. Queues and slow moving crowds and tour groups everywhere even at the start of march. It was a weekend and the tourists were almost all Spanish so may have come from Madrid. My advice, if you come here avoid weekends or you will feel like you are in a giant theme park.

We love charming medieval villages/towns and Toledo is right up there with the best! It's larger than Segovia so has different feel to it, but definitely recommend going with a guide or taking your time to wander not only touristy streets but charming quiet alleyways, very nice indeed! Went on a weekday last week - not crowded at all fortunately. Has a different feeling to it than Segovia in our opinion - this one takes longer to walk which is nice if have the time. We feel both cities are must sees!

We have been before but this is such an amazing city you can come again and again. Aside from the obvious attractions it is lovely just to explore the streets and alleys looking at the architecture. This place is a great day trip from Madrid but you can't see it all in one day.

Justifiably listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the old town of Toledo is an attractive, historic and very interesting place to visit. Not surprisingly, lots of people think the same and the city centre can get very busy. It is worth noting however that if you venture into some of the little side streets away from the shopping areas, you can find lots of peaceful places to wander.

We had a half day visit via group tour of Toledo. I cannot say enough about this UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is simply amazing to walk around and get lost in. This is a must see if you are in Madrid, and want to do a half-day trip and experience true Spanish cultural heritage. One of my requirements to book group travel in Spain, was to ensure that Toledo was on the itinerary.

Our favourite city of our roadtrip, as in beauty. But for sights nearly everything was shut. Lots of restaurants only open Thursday to Sunday. It was quite annoying. Use the escalators and buses to get about. On the sight you want to see i.e alcazar go on to Google press the sight and the bus number will come up. 1.40€ is the price. Taxi minimum price 4.60€

With some friends, we arrived in Toledo in the afternoon. After passing through ancient streets, visiting the Cathedral and plaza, we realized it was a mistake to come to Toledo with so little time.
The maze of streets are amazing, a thing to behold at the bend of almost every corner.
To make it more interesting, without the gps and maps, it's easy to get lost in the wonder of Toledo.

A must-see in central Spain. Full of great monuments in a characterful setting. If you arrive by car, search for the Safont car park. It's free and there is an easy short walk and a series of escalators to take you up to the old town. The car park is very busy and you may have to wait a bit for a space, but there is always somebody leaving. Seemed safe to us either day or evening.

The historic centre of Toledo is wonderfully atmospheric place to visit with it's many narrow medieval lanes and endless places to wander into and get a little lost. Most of the main attractions of museums and churches in Toledo will be in the old town.
Bring comfortables shoes though, it's hilly!

Toledo is a MUST if you have a spare day when visiting Madrid. Although the old city is not a huge area there is a great deal to see and to see it all you would need at least 2 or probably 3 full days. If you only have one day then come early and leave late. A lot of the attractions seem to open late - 7.30pm is not uncommon so maybe get a train arriving here about 9am and one back at 8pm or even later. A train only takes 33 minutes from Madrid and costs about Euro 10 each way.
The station itself is magnificent and worth a few minutes before you walk up into town. Do not buy a tourist map at the station but head up to Plaza de Zocodover where the Tourist Information will give you a much better map for free with opening times and prices on the back.
To get to the old town from the station walk along the main road in the same direction as the train was going till you get to the roundabout and take a left to walk by the river and after a short climb you reach a bridge to cross.
If you don't want to climb the steps head right and climb up the road on your left. After a couple of minutes you will see a concrete entrance on the left to a car park which also has escalators that take you right up to the top.
As far as essential sights you MUST do a full tour of the Cathedral with audio guide (allow 1-2 hours). The El Greco museum is superb - allow 1 hour. The Sephardic Museum is worth doing - allow 45 minutes. The monastery of San Juan de los Reyes is great but only 30 minutes. Avoid the Synagogue Santa Maria la Blanca. There are a lot more other places to see but maybe spend some time wandering around the alleyways.
For marzipan Santo Tome comes highly recommended but look at the artisan made produce from the nuns at the Convent of San Antonio de Padua (especially their Yemas). There is a lot of tourist tat for sale here but I found some fabulous artisan made knives (made in Toledo) at Artesania Morales on Plaza del Conde - they also sell a lot of other tourist rubbish but their own crafted kitchen knives and pen knives are beautiful and not too expensive.
If you want a good cheap meal we found a small local café in the Jewish quarter called Café Transito - on Calle Reyes Catholics between the Sephardic Museum and the Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes.
One final tip. If you have come by train get back to the station at least 20 minutes before your train departs as there is airport style security and the queues can be long and the train may not wait!

Hi John, what's the best way to travel from Madrid to Toledo?

We took one of the tour buses. It was convenient and informative. We did the full day trip which started with a short tour and then gave us the rest of the time on our own. The 1/2 day trips is not long enough. We enjoyed having a brief overview and then time on our own to explore. The Cathedral is truly amazing. Make sure you allocate enough time but also make sure you get to view the baths. They close during the midday so you have to time that location right. Enjoy!

Hi, I am flying into (and out of) Madrid - but staying in Toledo. What is the easiest/cheapest way to get to Toledo from Madrid airport - thanks

I am using Welcome. But that is a private transfer.
My suggestion is Expedia search for transfers. They will have options. Or better off Trip Advisers search best tours to Toledo. The cheapest would be a bus tour from airport. 100s a day coming into Toledo. Pick the one that offers the best in sites because:
- I like an informed guide.
- I like to know where I am going.

If a day trip, spend all day, it’s amazing! We took the train from Madrid and it was our favourite spot in Spain. Spent three weeks in Spain and Toledo was the highlight.

We have no tour guide, actually the audio guide of the cathedral is excellent. Have fun!
