The memorial was built through public subscription and unveiled in 1921. Various voluntary groups have cared for it over the years - Toc H Society, local branch of the British Legion and the resident led LEADER 2 Environmental Group. The latter used
European grants in 2000 to add the railings and landscaping.
There is a clock in the tower, because the only one in the village in the early 20th century was in the post office. People waiting for a bus we’re damaging the shop front by standing on the window sill to see the time.

It’s still so nice to see these fabulous war memorials still cared for.
Hinderwells is no exception. A superb statement to all the hero’s that fought for us all during the wars.

We spotted this War Memorial Clock Tower in Hinderwell and stopped to have a look. As most War memorials don't have a clock it is unusual to see. It is located at the road junction for Runswick Bay set in its own area with a gate. There is an inscription that reads:
Pass not this stone in sorrow but in pride
and live your lives as nobly as they died
There is a roll of honour for both the World Wars.
Stop if you get a chance and take a look.

North York Moors National Park rescued the clock from being replaced, by agreeing to pay for a complete overhaul and maintenance costs for the next ten years using Section 106 funding and a local horologist. It now keeps good time and is wound every week by a volunteer resident.
NYMNP also engaged an expert stone mason to repoint the memorial with lime mortar (using the correct recipe!), to prevent moss and algae forming on the stonework. Should continue to look magnificent for many more years to come.

Well kept and clearly respected monument. I stopped to look on a lovely 5 mile run to Staithes. This is clearly a community that keeps it's traditions.

As a lover of WW1 history I was immediately drawn to this wonderful memorial depicting the locals who fell in the 2 wars.
It is easy to find at the end on Main Street and is immaculately maintained.
I will not spoil it for other visitors, suffice to say, the inscription will melt the hardest of hearts. A lovely structure.

This is an exceptional war memorial commemorating our war dead from 2 world wars. It is beautiful and unusual in that it features a clock and I felt proud that is so well maintained. It is in a prominent position and cannot be missed at the corner of the road where you turn off for Runswick Bay, our destination.
We shall not forget.

At the end of Hinderwell, this Great Memorial reminds us that we must never forget.
It is well tended and unusual in that it a Clock.
It was nice to make a short stop, view the words and the names and say a quiet thanks (from one born after WW2).

Especially focussed on the world wars, and has an very important message to send to on your way with a thought in your head and perhaps a new purpose.
