This piece of the old Santander wall is located under the Plaza Porticada. The entrance is by appointment and it costs 2 euros per person, but you can get a better deal (4 euros for 3 sites: the cathedral, the wall and the bomb shelter). There are 3 videos, in Spanish but with English subtitles, depicting what a pilgrim would have seen and described when arriving to the old Santander by boat in the 13th Century. There are only about 25 meters of wall on display, but well worth visiting. Highly recommended.

It took us a bit of wandering around to find the Muralla,, but once there I thought it was the best way to spend a couple of hours ever. The town of Santander looks pretty ordinary on the surface, its shops and streets are charming, but not breath taking. The Muralla speaks of the history which formed the city we see today. The architecture is amazing, all the arches constructed without the aid of computers, the vaulting seems to whisper as the you travel through and the atmosphere created is effective. The underground museum carries on the discovery theme, but the way the exhibits are displayed , the lighting for effect and the excellent guide make the visit very special. Anyone who loves history and is interested in the way cultures succeed one another each inscribing its own signature on the social and architectural landscape, will love the Muralla. Small children however won't, the way through is too dim for them, they don't understand the attraction and the push chairs can get in the way.Older children (juniors 6+ ) are interested and some of the questions I overheard from one family showed understanding and thoughtfulness.

The ceilings along this plaza are superb, the stone work is clean and it offers an insight into the Spanish history, these are all in Spanish (no English translation is provided). It costs €1 to enter and is worth a look.

The guided tour (compulsory) is only in Spanish though the videos did have English subtitles. Found it very interesting and recommend a visit especially if you speak Spanish.
It was raining so an hour out of the rain was a bonus.

It is definitely worth paying a visit on a dull beachless day. I recommend seeing it as the guide will explain everything very well to you.
