- VadimMurmansk, Russia26,387 contributionsBest views of Santander. This funicular is quite a new phenomenon for Santander. It has been transporting citizens for free since 2008. Working hours are very convenient: from 6 am to 12 PM. The cabin is large and can accommodate 20 people. Even the bike will fit if You want to climb up with the bike. However, the main motive for the tourist is the wonderful views of Santander. Perhaps the best views.Visited June 2019Written April 9, 2020
- macedonboyGlasgow, United Kingdom179,494 contributionsIncredible Views From The TopA funicular train that takes passengers up to Prado San Roque. The whole area is residential building, the hill is steep and I imagine many locals are thankful for the ride. There's also a nice viewing point overlooking Santander at the last stop. Not amazing fun, but fun and the views from the top are incredible.Visited November 2022Written December 13, 2022
- Steve_Grant1Oldham, United Kingdom1,554 contributionsOut of orderHard to write a review of this as it 2as out of service at the time of our visit with the car stuck between two floors. Thankfully we had walked to the top from our hotel so did not have the alternative of a long stair climb. Views from the top are ok.Visited November 2022Traveled as a coupleWritten November 30, 2022
- niamhDonegal Town, Ireland167 contributionsworth a visit, it`s free!A free spin in a funicular, why not! This is a 5 minute walk directly across from the Botin building, there are some of the city`s wonderful escalators and moving walkways to get you to the base of the funicular and a peculiar mural of some malevolent looking squirrels also. This seems to have been built to facilitate the local residents who live up the steep hills surrounding Santander, rather than as a tourist attraction, it was all locals using it, with shopping etc. get off at the 3rd stop for the lovely views, this is a simple free pleasureVisited July 2019Traveled with familyWritten July 8, 2019
- margaret hWoking, United Kingdom126 contributionsFree, squash in with the locals, see another side to this town. You can see the funicular from the sea front, the Infomation office gave me a map, and clear instruction for the 7 min walk to the bottom. It goes up and down all day with tourists a locals alike. Dont do what some tourists did - take it up and down without alighting, just for the ride - it obviously annoys locals going about their day when no one gets off, and they cant get on! Otherwise its something to do, catch the local team playing footie at the top, make your way down by foot - steep but you get to see the social housing side of Santander.Visited November 2017Written November 7, 2017

- Toby BBoston, Massachusetts134 contributionsView from the TopMoving walkways and a free funicular -- it doesn't get much easier than this to take in the impressive panorama of downtown Santander and the Cantabrian Sea. Once at the top, and after taking all those pictures, it's worth spending a little more time exploring the immediate neighborhood. Walk left from the funicular, alongside the playing field (on your right). In a few seconds, you'll reach a small street. Turn right -- and just ahead, across that larger street, are a choice of cafes where you can enjoy indoor/outdoor seating, tapas, drinks . . . and do some people-watching. A perfect complement to the funicular expedition and the view from above!Visited September 2018Traveled as a coupleWritten October 19, 2018

Discovered this on Trip Advisor while looking for things to do in Santander. Were so glad we did, while not much else was open in the town we decided to go on a little walk to find this and I’m glad we did. It was very strange using escalators in the street, all part of the fun!! And then basically get a lift to the top. The views from above were great, lovely scenery, fantastic views of the sea and local area. The walk back down was very steep but again was part of the fun! I would definitely recommend to do this its a great free activity.

I read the review of the funicular before we went to Santander, and was determined to find it...It was tucked away, but well worth the effort(eventhough it is a public facility rather than a visitor attraction ).the train is spotlessly clean, smooth and efficient- especially when you see the hill. Also it is free, and for a family with a couple of children that matters, as kids love a quest and a discovery. The views from the top are super, and you get to see the town like a local.

The Funicular del Rio de La Pila is a kind of a lift on a 3 min ride from the Mirador Rio de la Pila to Calle de la Pila. The journey has 4 fast stops, is free, the cabin is kind of small (6-8 person). Sincerely, I consider more usefull (avoiding the several steps of the stairs) than an attraction. The view from Mirador is great, the journey is usefull... but I wouldn't give the trouble if not wanted to reach city center from that part of town where I my hotel was. Operational till midnight.

On which street do the escalators start? I want to use the escalators and funicular to get to Calle Maria Christina.

Calle Rio de la Pila. It’s really central. We used the Santander Bank building as a guide, from there it’s more or less one road.
