This cute sculptural ensemble seemingly celebrates the joys of youth, but sadly hides a sad part of Santander. There was a time when beachcombers such as the poor and orphaned children, who frequented the docks of Santander Bay, survived through petty theft. Sometimes coins would be thrown into the sea from passengers of passing boats. The children would dive into the sea to find the coins as depicted in the sculptures.

The monument to the Raqueros shows 4 young boys in bronze. One is about to dive. The raqueros were young boys, all poor, who would dive if a tourist threw a coin into the sea. They made their living that way. The artist who made the statues unfortunately is not mentioned on the plaque.

At last a group of statues of poor common people. Really much more representatives than those statues of conquerors, priests, kings or even dictators...

We came across this monument to the lost vagabond children of Santander docks and found their story fascinating.

The walk along the promenade is fabulous, with lots of entertainment and pop-up cafes, etc. Some excellent restaurants on town side.

A lovely place to sit (plenty of benches) and contemplate view of Santander bay while imagining its past history.

A set of beautiful statues dedicated to the kids who used to dive into the bay after the coins thrown by the people from the ferries. Great view, especially in combination with the beautiful bay of Santander.

We did not understand the story behind the Monumento a Los Raqueros until later....but the statues are extremely impressive and a fitting tribute.....
