This church is situated between the lovely Parque Garcia Sanabria and the plaza Principe de Asturias on the Calle del Pilar (also well known for having a department of El Corte Ingles and of Marks & Spencers).
It is an oasis of peace in a busy area, with olive trees around the sides of it. It is run by the Claretian Brothers* and is dedicated to the Patroness of Spain, Our Lady of the Pillar (Spanish: Nuestra Señora del Pilar) which is the name given to the Blessed Virgin Mary for her miraculous appearance in Zaragoza, Spain at the time of the emergence of Christianity.
We went there to Mass on May Day. Outside flowing down the street was a noisy 'Right to Work' protest march with 'the red flag flying', but inside the church there was blissful peace. Not that the church is cut off from doing good for the poor - the Claretians are in the forefront of social work. The parishioners had a stall in the Parque Garcia Sanabria selling cakes and biscuits to support the Brothers' missionary work worldwide.
Although the building is only 50 years old, it is in traditional style and seems ageless.
*The Claretian Brothers (popularly known as "the Claretians") are a community of Roman Catholic priests and brothers whose ministries are highly diverse and vary depending on the needs of the area. They focus on seeing life through the eyes of the poor and respond to the biggest need at the time. They have a special devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

While walking from the bus station and from the historic city center towards the Garcia Sanabria Park, you should certainly stop at this church along the way, at the corner of San Lucas and El Pilar streets. Simple wooden benches and dark ceiling in comparison with glass mosaic windows is a beautiful ensemble.

We returned to Mass here and found it a heavenly experience. We also revisited the picture of the Claretian Brothers who were massacred in South America in 1936. May they rest in peace and rise in glory!

A more modern design than perhaps normal but beautiful nevertheless. Marvelous interior, amazing alter area and very atmospheric. Free of charge to enter.
