The biggest square in the city. In the middle is a kind of artificial lake, very large, about 75m in diameter. The square was rebuilt in 2006, when the ruins of a former castle, Castillo de San Cristobal, were discovered. At this moment, these ruins (only a few fragments of a stone wall) can be visited for free. They are located UNDER the square. Also here you can see the beautiful monument named "Monumento a Los Caidos".

Interesting plaza. Large round pool with seating.
Close by large clock tower and two very large statues.
Also close by is the tourist info.
From this location the capital of tenerife awaits.

if you're in Santa Cruz for Carnaval, stay away from Meson Brasil outside the tourist information center near Plaza Espana. it's a tourist trap food vendor that's a total rip off. they don't advertise their prices, so shame on me for not asking first, but they charge 20 euros a plate for some really terrible food. we had the worst calamari ever, cold and soggy, and chorizo that was fished out of the charcoal on a plate of fries that had someone's hair on it. everywhere else we saw afterwards had good prices and advertised them, and the food looked better too. wish we explored more before going to Meson Brasil, but it suckered us right outside the tourist center. when I was hearing tables around me exclaim at their bill while we were eating, I just figured they ordered a lot of drinks, which in the US is usually a ripoff. but no, the food is way way overpriced and terrible to boot. stay away from Meson Brasil.

This is located at the bottom of the car-free streets where you find lots of shops and restaurants, right by the port. There are lots of benches to relax in the shade and taxis are available in 3 locations nearby - we always took a taxi from there because anywhere else to go in Santa Cruz is likely to be an up-hill walk.

This is a modern plaza on the port-side. Made up of a large modern shallow pond, with a vast fountain. There are a number of seats around the outside both in the sun a shade. There are a couple of kiosks selling snacks and drinks with cafe's and restaurants close by. Being in the centre of the city, this place is quiet and tranquil. Underneath down some steps are the original city walls. A view across the bay the ferries and cruise ships come and go. A short walk will take you back to the busy shopping streets.

We visited plaza des espagna several times during our three weeks in Santa Cruz. We were traveling with a two-year-old and a four-year-old who thought the playground was great. It was nice with sandy play areas, and climbing structures. There is also a large shallow pool where adults race model boats. It was a pleasant break during otherwise busy days of touring around.
