There is a 2€ charge for entry to the church and the bell tower ... but it is well worth the price. The church/cathedral interior is stunning. The wood carving around the doors and chapels is exquisite and the altar beautiful. I enjoyed every bit of it. It has to be seen to be appreciated.

You can see the church and its spire almost everywhere in the city.
Walking on the pedestrian street Calle Obispo Rey Redondo
All along the Casa de los Capitanes Generales.
The avenue that is lined with colorful shops, noon, and evenings is filled with people.
There are quite lively bars and nightlife in the city.
Recommended for parking in the parking lot near Hotel Laguna Nivaria.
The parking is called Parking Las Quinteras, from there walk all the way to the promenade up to the church.
Very special and peaceful atmosphere in the city.

Beautiful church, beautiful stained glass windows and very detailed ceiling on back of the church. Magnificent altarpiece with three-dimensional effect, also the pillars and arches are spectacular. At Christmas time an enormous amount of red poinsettias in front of the altar.

This is one of the many beautiful churches and ex-convents of La Laguna and belongs to the group where one entrance ticket opens the doors to five different places of interest ( 5 EUR ), churches or former monasteries. You are able to buy the ticket from the tourist info next to this church and you get also access to Torre de la Concepcion, Casa Salazar (excellent), Santa Catalina de Siena and Convento de Santo Domingo.

SAN CRISTOBAL DE LA LAGUNA SANTA CRUZ TENERIFE

We arrived around 08.00, about an hour ahead of HAL’s Noordam, docking close to the inter-island ferry terminal.

The ship’s shuttle dropped us close to Fundación tram (trolley) stop on the Tranvia metro Tenerife system. Being quite early on a Sunday, everywhere was closed and there was little traffic, though there were maybe 15 other locals waiting for the next outbound tram.

Our destination was La Laguna, conveniently located close to the end of one of the Tranvia’s line at Trinidad. The one-way fare was Euro1.35 and we had taken the precaution of having sufficient coins, judging correctly that the self-service ticket machine would not accept euro notes, although it did give change, so there is no necessity to have the correct amount.

La Laguna claims to be Tenerife’s second most important city, its first capital until 1723 and, from 1999, a UNESCO world heritage site. Its full name is Ciudad de San Cristóbal de la Laguna, which is Saint Christopher's city. It sits at 1,600 feet above sea level but only about five miles from Santa Cruz and the principal streets are largely traffic-free. By virtue of it being Sunday, the main street of La Laguna was virtually dead, with most shops closed. Many of the buildings on the main street date back several hundred years. At the top end lies the cathedral, outside of which were several cafes, which seemed to burst into life once the service in the cathedral was over and people streamed out of the main entrance.

The weather was cold here, not least because of the height above sea level, rain clouds threatened and, after exploring a few streets off the cathedral square, we patronised a café in the square for two reasonably-priced hot chocolates and an hour’s worth of Wi-Fi. Then we retraced our steps back down the main street to the Trinidad tram terminus and then back to the ship. Even now, retail outlets in Santa Cruz were virtually all still closed.

Considering this port is very tourist orientated, it was very surprising that most places, not only in La Laguna, but also in Santa Cruz resembled a ghost town because it was Sunday. Seemingly gone are the days, when, if a cruise ship was in port, shopkeepers would stay open until the ship departed!

We did not explore the church but we did ascend the Torre which houses the bells that still chime out as I found out when standing right by one! My hearing has only just recovered! The entry fee is 2 euro but well worth it as the views are across La Laguna and well beyond including being able to see the planes land at Tenerife North airport.

For 5 euros you can climb the tower of the church and also visit de church. If you would like to climb the church you have to take the stairs. It is not that heavy as it seems. And the view is really beautiful. The church is also really nice.

Having had this church pointed out on our tour, and being told that (unlike some attractions & many shops) it is open in the afternoon, we went and paid the 2 euros each to climb the tower. As the photos show it is certainly worth doing (unless one has some health problems - no lifts!)

La Laguna is a magnificent part of town easily reached by a 35 minute tram ride from Santa Cruz. Built in the 16th century it is built on a grid with wide streets and grand buildings. Our Lady of Conception Church built in 1515 has the tower alongside that when climbed gives you some excellent views across the area.
It now costs two euro each to climb up 5 floors to the bell tower , the bells chime every quarter . There is little to see in the tower but the views are worth your effort.

The ticket price covers your entry into the church - if you like churches this is another beautiful example with a fancy pulpit , lots of crucifixions and coffered ceilings. Plus and I quote - the font where the reduced Guanches were baptised - the Guanches of course being the original ' savages' of Tenerife.
