About
The Museo Internacional de Arte Contemporáneo-Castillo de San José, is located near Puerto Naos and Arrecife, capital of the island, and the place where César Manrique was born. It was built between 1776 and 1779 under the ruling of King Charles III. The museum’s privileged location on top of a cliff, made protection from Castillo de San Gagriel easier, and it meant it was a crucial spot to defend Arrecife and its port from the dangers the modern states posed to the Spanish Empire. When its use for defensive purposes decreased, it was left abandoned for almost a century. It was Manrique (who else), who convinced the authorities of the island to transform the ancient fortress into an art gallery that ended up opening in 1976, the Museo Internacional de Arte Contemporáneo. Manrique started up the 1st International Visual Arts Competition with the work of Picasso, Tàpies, Miró, Mompó, Millares, Zóbel and some of his own creations that inspired one of the largest abstract art collections.

    Definitely quality over quantity
Having read some of the other reviews of this building/gallery, I was pleasantly surprised. There are 4 galleries, 2 larger and 2 smaller rooms plus the artworks outside and on the roof. The building itself has been beautifully restored and is set in typical Canarian landscaping. Before visiting the galleries we enjoyed a light lunch in the restaurant. This is below the galleries and you do not have to pay the gallery fee to enter the restaurant. The toilets in the restaurant are worth a visiting themselves! As for the view, you're in a container/liner port - what do you expect? We enjoyed the contrast between the building we were in and the liners. We chose to walk from the Bus Station and it was 25 minutes. We spent over two hours at the gallery/restaurant and felt it was well worth it.

1770's historic castle redesigned in the 1970's by Cesar Manrique to become a museum of art
Built between 1776 and 1779 to provide defensive against pirates and then resigned by the famous Cesar Manrique (who was born nearby 1919 to 1992.) and renovated to become the International Museum of Contemporary Art in the 1970;s . The museum primarily shows art of between 1950 and 1980. There is free parking, a nice restaurant below, with a few additional nice painting / bits or art (that at the time we entered (mid afternoon and during the week), the restaurant had two couples inside), and great views across the harbor and surrounding area. Although there is not very much art located inside, if your a fan of Manrique, it may be worth the visit. Entry is 4 euro for non resident people (in Jan24). The restaurant below can be accessed via side steps and used without paying for access to the castle. there is a dedicated website for the castle, that may be worth reading about before you visit.

Fantastic art and sculpture, with cool bar and restaurant in Cesar style.
Fantastic museum dedicated to art and sculpture in the last 100 years. Set in astonishing surroundings and complete with views of the crystal clear waters by the docks, you won’t be disappointed! Not good for young or people with mobility issues. Great restaurant and bar!

Museu Internacional de Arte Contemporaneo is located in San José Castle, in the surroundings of Arrecife, the main town of Lanzarote Island. It is a nice historical building located in the coast, where inside there is the art museum. Also, there is a nice bar and inner rooms designed by Cesar Manrique. The building is very nice, but the expositions are only ok. Nice.

The museum for modern art in a fortress thrives on contrast. Beautiful rooms, interesting art objects and a good special exhibition. Not big, just right for a quick trip to the museum. The restaurant in the basement is worth a visit; you should at least have a coffee here and experience the spatial installation by Cesar Manrique.

Tiny art gallery with artists I didn’t know. Such a shame that there was no information about live of artists, style, years burn etc. the saving grace to this was the old building itself and super place for coffee in the lower floor with half circle floor to ceiling windows out to sea.

Well worth the walk from the town centre. Interesting art collection housed in an old fort saved by Cesar Manrique. Down stairs the restaurant which overlooks where the cruise ships dock is fabulous and a great place for coffee after taking in the artworks.

Built controversially in 1776 at a time when the islanders were on the brink of starvation and suffering drought conditions. And really! a fortified castle at a time when pirate attacks had long since melted into the history books.

Nowadays it is primarly a museum of modern art and a upmarket restaurant overlooking the cruise ship harbour of Puerto Naos.

Regarding the restaurant, which can be accessed independently from the museum. They are working with local products and very good elaborations, the atmosphere is fantastic and very clean. A great visit.

We would like to put the record straight re this museum. Several reviewers have expressed disappointment with the limited art on display. However, there is no mention of what a fabulous building it is, Caesar Manriqiue's conversion of an old castle into a very interesting contemporary gallery with unusual and beguiling spaces. Further, there is the wonderful restaurant on the lower level of the museum. Some reviewers have righty highlighted how spectacular this is and we would add hugely to this observation. It is a vast space with full height windows looking onto the sea and beyond. But it is also a terrific restaurant. We had a great tapas meal that was good value and we found the service friendly and helpful, if slightly slow. The restaurant brims with strong design features and quality materials. As for the art, it is true that the main collection is limited and a bit out of date but, when we there, there was a very interesting exhibition of contemporary photography in the lower part of the museum. Perhaps the main drawback is that the museum is some distance from the centre of Arricife. However, we walked there without difficulty and took a taxi back to the town, which was simple to do and cheap. In sum, a very worthwhile, unusual and impressive experience.

The building is beautiful I thought. I didn't really get a lot of the modern art but the architecture is a real gem. On the lower floor is a restaurant which has stunning views out over the harbour and full glass windows all round. We had the tapas sharing menu which was €15 each and was really delicious and wonderfully cooked. The loos are brill. Best view I've ever seen from a toilet window. Make sure you go up on the roof to see the view. You can visit the restaurant without paying for the art gallery but at €4 each it's well worth it to go inside the Castillo. We walked from Arrecife center, which is quite a walk, but easily manageable as long as you talk your time.

In the most unappealing part of Arrecife, a truly beautiful place. Thank you Manrique, thank you Pancho Lasso, and thank you Jason deCaires Taylor.
