- Travelingjohn123Peterlee, United Kingdom3,135 contributionsNice selection of beachesVery nice selection of beaches at the end of a 2 mile off road drive. All the beaches are sandy and some more easily assessable than others. The beaches close to the restaurant are very crowded, the nude beach across the cliff tops less so. Take your pickVisited February 2024Traveled soloWritten February 28, 2024
- Zelma INewark-on-Trent, United Kingdom10 contributionsLovely beach, maybe a one time visit in a regular car.Lovely beach once you get there! We visited in March 2024. Easy to find the "road" down to the car park. Be warned, it is extremely bumpy, rippled and strewn with loose gravel and some larger stones. We took it slowly as we like many were in a hire car. We were overtaken. I wouldn't advise driving fast as you could easily puncture a tyre on a rock and there is nothing around you but barren waste land. It wouldn't do the suspension any good either. Once you get to the pay booth (3 euros, card only) the next stretch is slightly better, but not good. The ticket booth was deserted by the time we left around 4.30, so maybe free if you arrive later. The car park is large and not even half full when we went. There are several beaches, no facilities of any kind on the beach. Take everything you need, including shade if you want it. A small restaurant perches on the cliff top. We didn't go in so can't comment. Path down to the beach is steep ish. Maybe not good for those with mobility issues. Not a place for buggies. The beach is sloping, sandy and the sea fairly shallow for a little way. Rocks around either side should be good snorkeling but beware, the sea was choppy and visibility mostly poor a short distance from shore. My husband went further than me and was concerned by the strength of the swell and current dragging him about, at times he was swimming but not getting anywhere. Weak swimmers should stay close to shore. Snorkeling close in and to the sides was good in anycase. Nice beach, can be busy. Take what you need and drive slowly.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 17, 2024
- Joseph P8 contributionsAwkward to get to but worth it! Fab snorkellingMy wife was drawn here like a magnet (mainly for the instagram i think). We went with our 5yr old and our 2yr old. Initially we planned to come by sea taxi from Playa Blanca as we had heard on Trip Advisor. However, on discussing it appears either this has stopped or has not started yet (late March 2024) . The options for us were: hire car (plus toll road), taxi (but risk not getting one back), local bus (but having to walk through the desert), walk from playa blanca (not really suitable with kids, a boat trip (but this was €69 per adult, and €49 per kid (inc food) and stops in beach next door as papagayo is too small, and then you walk over the hill. The final option that came to us, was hire bikes in Playa Blanca (we used Papagayo Bike Hire as it was near our hotel). We hired two mountain bikes one with a baby seat and one with a trailer €42 total. Im quite into my road cycling and my wife does the odd trail. The road was not for the faint hearted, very bumpy, long dusty, and in places hilly. Plus the hills are gravelly so your wheels can slip. However well worth the trip we arrived early so the beach was empty and beautiful. Girls loved it. Sand perfect. My wife and i went snorkelling (our own kit) and it was the best we have found in Canaries. I assume as its a national park its a no take zone for fishing as the Ballan Wrase, Cuckoo Wrase, Mullet, and Various Bream Species were the biggest specimens i have seen in either the Canaries or the Mediterranean. May not be some peoples cup of team with lacking facilities, and a hard or expensive trip but it was perfect for us!Visited March 2024Traveled with familyWritten March 27, 2024
- Custard-cakeOrton-on-the-Hill, United Kingdom110 contributionsLovely clean beachesReally lovely beaches here. We access track is rough but worth the trek. Costs 3 euros to get into the park but there are 3 or 4 beaches to go to. We didn't go to the cafe but it looked nice. If you like geocaching there are 2 here.Visited April 2024Traveled with familyWritten April 1, 2024
- T0mmieCastricum, The Netherlands165 contributionsA great beach that you really should visitWe visited this beach a couple of times. Never had to pay a fee. (June ‘24) You get here via a dirt road with gravel and lots of potholes that I wouldn’t want to risk my own car on. But I guess a rental is more up to these jobs (pun intended). After some 6 kms, you get to a fairly large parking lot which is free of charge. Then you can walk to the beach itself that can be reached via a kind off sand path with steps. Not suitable for people who are walking disabled! There is a cafe/restaurant on top that we didn’t visit but was crowded enough. I guess they must be doing something oke here. The beach itself is secluded by a rock formation which gives it a cosy feel. The sand is not vulcanic and is really soft. We thought it to be not overcrowded so there was room for everyone. Many people left after an hour or two to make room for new visitors. The water was as cold as everywhere on this island. But still a nice refreshment and shallow in the beginning. No large rocks, so no watershoes needed. Each time we went to this beach we encountered a sudden strong wind which carried a lot of sand. Even a small sand twister once that spread a lot of belongings all over the place. Consider yourselves warned…! ;-) So, should you go here? Absolutely! This is not to miss. Bring your own food and drinks and leave nothing but footprints. Enjoy your day! - petejankoLeicester, United Kingdom135 contributionsViews like postcards but way to get there is awfulWell presented, but overrated. We got there by car, and it was a very stressful road where it was 20 minutes driving max 15km/h on the class 2 road. (We had peugeot 208 ). The road it's awful, and on the end, you notice that they don't have WC! Views very nice but no facilities.... 2 bars but not very keen to let you use a toilet. You can see people going only for wee into a sea. About the water and beach. Nice sand but stones in the sea , so it is very difficult to enter on barefoot. We went to Playa blanca after and it was very niceVisited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten July 14, 2024

We hadn’t been for a few years and had previously enjoyed the secluded bays and easy swimming. Playa Blanca has sprawled in all directions and will soon be engulfing Papagayo. It’s still €3 euros to park but when we went it was packed and lost all its charm

Absolutely stunning beaches. Playa del Papagayo is the most photogenic but the neighbouring Playa de la Cera is also great and quieter too.
There is a €3 per car entry to the nature reserve, note this is card only and they do not accept cash! The beaches are about 5km along an unmade dirt road, with a large car park at the end and steps down to the beaches either side of the headland.
There are a couple of bar/cafes on the headland between the beaches, Casa El Barba has a beautiful view over the beach and worth the wait for a table.

Nice beaches split into two with a cafe on the top of the cliffs in the middle. Can get a little busy and beware if it’s been raining as it makes for a very interesting muddy drive as it along at the end of an unmade road. The cost to enter the unmade road was very reasonable. There are a few steps to go down to reach the beach but not really a problem. Overall, an enjoyable visit.

There is a dirt track that leads to this area of natural beauty with a fee of around 3 euros to get to several small beaches, each with their own charm. Some are virtually deserted but the one to snorkel at is Playa Papagayo. You can see the big car park from the track, and there is a restaurant on the cliff top. You climb down to the beach which offers shelter from the wind and clear waters, but beware, it is popular. If you don't want crowds go to the furthest beaches - there are cliffs to walk and views across to Fuertaventura.

Even if the road to get there is a bit bumpy, this beach is worth it!! From above you can see several nearby beaches interspersed with the cliff but Papagayo is on the left. It is wonderful: a little breezy, very fine sand, crystal clear water, not very moved, which, kissed by the sun, shows all its various shades (from aqua green to light blue). We arrived early in the morning because after 10 it starts to fill up: around 9, the atmosphere is surreal, the quiet that the dim light gives to this place is something surprising. Then slowly as the sun rises you notice all the shades of the water, the colors light up and impress the sight. From the surrounding hills it is possible to have various ideas and glimpses for photos of the beach and the truly suggestive panorama. Above there is a bar restaurant which is open from 11.30am to 7.30pm.
I highly recommend it. It was a wonderful experience. I want to go back!!

I love this place and it is my favourite place on Lanzarote. We walk to the beaches from the Sandos Papaygayo hotel and to be fair the walk isn't as hard as some people are making out. We have found that to truly appreciate the beaches arrive just as the sun comes up when they are deserted which gives you a totally different perspective of their beauty

We have stayed here four times, last being November 22 and will be returning on the 15th June. Yes the hotel is very big and you can get lost, but there is always someone around who will direct you to your location. The Canarian bar has a great outdoor area to sit and enjoy the view, birds are a slight concern for me, but after a couple of days I do forget they are about . Food is very good in the main restaurant, the snack bar is great at lunch time and of course there are the two restaurants that need booking on arrival. We love the location, quiet and a beautiful walk along the coast to the Marina. Stop for a refreshing drink and if you feel up to walk into Playa Blanca. See you soon Papagayo!

This is the best beach of the island. It's inside a natural park so you have to pay a fee to get into the path that drives you to the beach and drive a few kilometers for a sandy track. There's place to park near the beach and a couple of restaurants there.
It's a good option to bring your own food or book place in one of the restaurants for the meal.
There are no public restrooms.

Superb beach, which deserves a little!
A dirt road (quite a lot of bumps and pebbles) over ten minutes with a toll of 2.5€ to access it. Our insurance for the rental car covered this dirt road. It shakes a little but very doable! There is then a parking lot with a restaurant (excellent!) and you descend a staircase to access the beach. A beautiful cove. We went there in the morning around 10:30 and there are fewer people. Clear water and possibility to snorkel.
