In Gran Canaria is available a nautic sport - La Vela Latina Canaria, which take place especially in Gran Canaria and Lanzarote with sailboats, with some trophies as reward.

This sail(boat) is to us, merely a point of recognition; to know where we have to turn of the motorway. No offence intended. It is not that big, by the way.

I think most of the reviews are talking about the city of Las Palmas, rather than this specific monument.
The photo suggests that the sculpture is bigger than it is - it really isn't that big.
Perfectly pleasant to go and have a look at if you're passing by - but not worth making a detour for.
